🔥 Training Together. Protecting Together.

This past weekend, 7 members of the East Gorham Fire Team joined 58 fellow firefighters from across the region for SP-103 Wildland Fire Fighter Training for Fire Agencies.

In total, 65 firefighters representing 12 departments — Upsala, Nolalu, Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shebandowan, O’Connor, Conmee, Pass Lake, East Gorham, Lappe, Kaministiquia, and Gillies — came together for two full days of learning, teamwork, and hands-on training.

A weekend of training means giving up personal time — and once again, these dedicated men and women showed up ready to learn, improve, and prepare to serve their communities. Training together strengthens our ability to work together when it matters most.

A huge thank you to all of the instructors and organizers who volunteered their time, knowledge, and expertise to make this training possible.

On behalf of the East Gorham Volunteer Fire Department, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to GlobalMedic and Air Canada Cargo for their generous support.

Thanks to GlobalMedic, our department has received fire-resistant wildland coveralls, providing our firefighters with enhanced protection while responding to wildland and grass fires. This donation continues their incredible support of our department, building on their previous donation of our wildland fire skid unit and further strengthening our wildland firefighting capabilities.

We also extend our appreciation to Air Canada Cargo for transporting this donation to Thunder Bay through their cargo network, helping ensure this vital equipment reached our department.

Thank you, GlobalMedic and Air Canada Cargo, for your continued commitment to supporting volunteer fire departments and the communities we proudly serve.

We would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank GlobalMedic for the amazing generosity towards us and many other fire departments. They have and are giving so many departments the ability to have an even faster respond and the ability to rapidly attack fires with limited personnel! Given the severity of the fire season to date, these fire skids will make a massive difference!

Thank you again and know we couldn’t be more thankful!

🚫 Restricted Fire Zone in Effect - Starting July 15

Due to the high to extreme fire hazard, increased wildland fire activity, and current fire conditions, the Ministry of Natural Resources is implementing a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) across the Northwest Region effective Wednesday, July 15 at 12:01 a.m. (local time).

🔥 No open-air burning is permitted within the Restricted Fire Zone, including campfires.

Help prevent human-caused wildland fires by respecting the restrictions.

View the Restricted Fire Zone map and learn more about the restrictions at Ontario.ca/fire updates.

WILDFIRES SPREADS FAST!
PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY.

Fires don’t wait and they don’t spread slowly.
In hot and dry conditions, one small spark can affect an entire neighborhood.

⚠️ Fire risk increases where homes are close to vegetation, open areas, or dry materials.

⚠️ WHAT CAUSES WILDFIRES?

🔥 Common ignition sources:
• Open burning / unattended fires
• Ci******es thrown on dry grass
• Electrical faults or power lines
• Sparks from tools or vehicles
• Lightning (natural cause)

🌬️ WHY WILDFIRES SPREAD FAST

• Dry vegetation = easy fuel
• Strong winds = rapid fire spread
• Heat = faster ignition of nearby materials
• Slopes = fire moves uphill quickly

➡️ Fire behavior becomes aggressive and difficult to control

🚨 HOW TO PREVENT WILDFIRES

✔ Clear dry leaves, grass, and debris
✔ Avoid burning during hot or windy days
✔ Follow local fire advisories / burn bans
✔ Keep equipment and wiring in good condition
✔ Properly dispose of ci******es

🛑 PROTECT OUR NATURE AND OUR HOMES

As of this afternoon, there are 84 active fires across the Northwest Region. We are closely monitoring this situation, actively responding and assigning resources, including air attack, to manage current fires.

The wildland fire hazard is high to extreme across large areas of the Northwest Region. Please use extreme caution with all outdoor activities to help reduce the risk of human-caused fires. We’d like to remind the public that outdoor burning rules are in effect: ontario.ca/outdoorfirerules.

Smoke may be visible in parts of the province. While not all fires are currently impacting communities directly, smoke may still affect local conditions.

You can find information on fire activity and hazard conditions on our interactive fire map: https://www.lioapplications.lrc.gov.on.ca/ForestFireInformationMap/index.html?viewer=FFIM.FFIM&locale=en-CA.

I'm sure many of you have noticed the smell of smoke in the area today. The smoke is coming from wildfires burning in other regions, and changing wind patterns are carrying it into our community.

If you're sensitive to smoke or have respiratory conditions, it's a good idea to limit prolonged outdoor activity and keep windows closed if the air quality worsens.

We'll continue to share updates as more information becomes available. Stay safe, everyone.
