You may be aware of the importance of Purple Day or National Epilepsy Day, which took place on March 26, 2026

It is a special day for folks like Tom. Connect supports Tom to work and participate in the community, and he is one of the 23,000 Manitobans who live with the daily challenges of epilepsy.

Tom is also among the 30% of Manitobans with epilepsy who's medications don’t stop their seizures. He has struggled with seizures his whole life and has always wanted them 'gone'. In 2019 Tom had a Vagus Nerve Stimulation device implanted in his chest to help stave off seizures. In 2024 the Epilepsy and Seizure Monitoring Unit opened at Health Sciences Centre, and Tom spent time there having his medication adjusted, and participating in a study on the effects of sleep aids on epilepsy. This had a positive effect on the number of Tom's seizures, but he was still having them.

In August of last year, Tom and his family learned of the benefits of Deep Brain Stimulation on epilepsy, and after consultation with his Epileptologist and Epilepsy Neurosurgeon new to HSC, Tom became a candidate for another implanted device.

Tom was a trailblazer - the first person living with epilepsy to have DBS surgery done right here in Manitoba, and he is excited about his future! 💜
