EU Agency eu-LISA

EU Agency eu-LISA eu-LISA is the EU Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems - The Digital Heart of Schengen

For the first time in its history the European Union has an agency responsible for managing and promoting information and communication technology (ICT) as a key success factor for the implementation of the Union’s policies in the area of justice, security and freedom. Today, the area of internal security is going through a major transformation, moving in part from the physical to the virtual worl

d. It is more and more dependent not only on the physical resources available, but also on data and information. Moreover, in today’s globalised world it is not realistic to expect that a single state will be able to ensure its security alone. Therefore, this transformation can only be addressed through the provision of sophisticated, flexible and integrated systems and solutions for law-enforcement cooperation and integrated border management at EU level. Being a young organisation, eu-LISA has the unique opportunity to grow and develop its operations following industry standards and best-practices. In this context, eu-LISA, the European Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, is called to increase the added value of ICT technology to the citizens of EU and through it to facilitate and proactively contribute to the success of the EU policies in the area of justice and home affairs and to support the Member States (MS) in their efforts for safer Europe.

🟧 On 12 June 2026, the new entered into operation, leveraging the shared Biometric Matching Service (sBMS) and key components of the EU interoperability architecture, including the European Search Portal (ESP) and the Common Identity Repository (CIR).

🟧 This marks an important milestone in the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and the wider interoperability framework.

🟧 The launch was carried out in close cooperation between eu-LISA, Member States, associated countries and the European Commission, with national systems connecting to the new Eurodac throughout the day.

🟧 The new system introduces enhanced biometric capabilities, including facial images, as well as a redesigned architecture that strengthens support for asylum and migration management across Europe.

πŸ’¬ "The entry into operation of the new Eurodac demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering secure, reliable and modern digital solutions that support national authorities in carrying out their tasks. It also showcases eu-LISA's growing capability to deliver complex large-scale systems using modern software engineering practices and increased in-house expertise," said Tillmann Keber, Executive Director of eu-LISA.

🟧 Built through eu-LISA's Software Factory approach, the new Eurodac is one of the first large-scale EU IT systems delivered using Agile and DevSecOps methodologies combined with increased in-house expertise.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to all colleagues, Member States, the European Commission, and our partners who contributed to making this important milestone a success.

🟦 Eurodac annual statistics 2025 are now available. In 2025, more than 1.1 million fingerprint data sets related to asylum applications, irregular border crossings and irregular stays were processed through the Central System, supporting cooperation and information exchange between national authorities across Europe.

🟦 The system also generated hundreds of thousands of matches, helping national authorities identify whether a person had previously applied for international protection or had been recorded elsewhere in Europe in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
