This month marks ✨ten✨ incredible years of The Community Impact Initiative!

Back in 2016, we had an idea: Turn empty homes into places of community, opportunity and regeneration.

Into places where you could confidently learn new skills, explore career pathways, and bring something positive into your community.

And what a journey it's been over the past decade. This June, we're celebrating every moment of it, and we hope you'll join us 🎂

1 in 3 of us volunteer in Wales.

And it's not just about giving our time, volunteering has been linked to making us genuinely happier 💛

Whether it's giving our minds break, to building relationships, or finding our confidence over time, the benefits run deeper than most of us realise.

How has volunteering helped you? We'd love to hear it, share your experience in the comments!

It's all hands on deck to get the final bits sorted at the newly regenerated Barry house, with our own Abi, Bex, and Ellen taking a break from their usual day to day and putting their flat pack building skills to the test!

The Women Construct Wales volunteer team did an absolutely incredible job of transforming this once empty property into a safe home for young adults making the transition from children’s care services, so it’s just the finishing touches left to make sure it's ready🙌

Flat pack was created to test us all - will we have a team left by the end of this?🤞

Leaving our comfort zones can absolutely be scary.

And the fear of the unknown often means we focus way too much on the ‘cons’.

“What if I look or feel like an idiot? What if the day is just full of awkward silences? What if they find out I have no idea what I’m doing?”

And in all of these scenarios, everyone is OBVIOUSLY watching and judging us 🙄

But in reality, what if it leads to meeting your people? Or finding something you enjoy and getting confident in you own abilities?

(While no-one is *actually* watching and judging.)

When we try something new, yeah it’s scary, but no-one starts off knowing everything, they just give it a go.

That’s a wrap on our Women Construct Wales project in Barry!💪

As a small thank you (and, let’s be honest, any excuse for a sweet treat), last week we celebrated with our amazing volunteers over cake in the sunshine 🌞🍰

23 brilliant women from Barry and the surrounding areas made this project a part of their journey, and we couldn't be more proud of what they have achieved over the last 6 months.

And it’s not just their own journeys they’ve invested in.

Together, they’ve transformed a once empty property into a safe, stable home for young people making the huge transition from children’s care services. Turning what can be an incredibly challenging time into something far more hopeful.

If that’s not a reason to celebrate with some cake, we don’t know what is 💛

A huge thank you to the Sacyr UK and Ireland team for rounding off the Women Construct Wales project with a tour of the new Velindre Cancer Centre site 💚

For over 70 years, Velindre Cancer Service has provided vital cancer support across south Wales. Seeing the new centre take shape, a service that will support 1.7 million people for generations to come, is something truly unforgettable.

Now two years into one of the largest construction projects in Wales, Sacyr hasn’t just transformed the physical landscape.

Working closely with their contractors, they are actively creating space and supporting women into construction, an industry where representation still has a long way to go.

As a result, the project has achieved a higher-than-national-average representation of women on site, reaching an impressive 19%. Within the Sacyr project team, women make up 30%, with both the Project Director and Construction Director roles led by female leaders.

And it was a difference we couldn’t miss the moment we stepped onto site, real proof that things can change.

For our Women Construct Wales volunteers, it was a chance to see themselves in that space and picture a future in the industry. And for that, we couldn’t be more thankful 💛

Its a bittersweet moment for us as Women Construct Wales nears the end in Barry 👷‍♀️

Over the last few weeks, the team have been busy making those finishing touches that really pull it all together.

Our volunteers have learned how to install shower units, gotten to grips with laying the carpet tiles and gone through many, many litres of paint 🙌

It’s nearly the end, and we can’t wait for this house to become a home for some of the most vulnerable - but we’re going to be so sad to see our volunteers go!

Thank you Crown Paints UK for the incredible donation of paint used on this project. Your support means the world to us!💛

1 in 4 of us are dealing with loneliness.

It could be a friend, a family member, or even that guy who seems to know everyone down your local, and you might never know it.

Even in the busiest rooms, we can still feel isolated. Sometimes it just takes a bit more to feel properly connected and find our people.

Sometimes it takes a shared interest to bond over, someone who genuinely listens and takes interest in what we have to say, or meeting that person who just gets us.

And sometimes it takes finding the right space to build a community and feel less alone.

Volunteering can be that space. It’s not just about giving your time, it’s about feeling part of something.

Something 90% of our volunteers found out by joining a project last year.

When we talk ‘employability’ it’s easy to get hung up on our qualifications, academic background and the experiences we can list on our CV.

But when it comes to our soft skills, we sometimes forget how important they actually are.

We’re talking about the confidence you feel when get to grips with something new, the ability to talk to anyone and everyone (including getting past the awkward silences), and the trust people have in you when you show up consistently 🙌

It’s those skills that mean just as much, sometimes more, as the ones we can show on paper.

Volunteering is just one of the many ways you can work on your soft skills. Want to know more about how Cii projects can help? DM us!

It’s about time we all got together again🙌

Working on projects across south Wales means we go lengths of time without meeting as a full team and seeing each other face to face, so days like today really are valuable.

And with big and exciting things coming up for us, it was the perfect excuse join up and make sure everyone is on the same page.

So here we are, finally together again as a team (without any internet issues or loud power tools jarring our convos!)🙌

An especially huge thank you to for having us today! 💛 (If you don’t know about Hwb y Gors, be sure to check their incredible story out.)
