As part of her European book tour for Backtalker: An American Memoir, the world-renowned legal scholar, civil rights advocate, and pioneer of "intersectionality," Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, is coming to the North West.

This marks Professor Crenshaw’s very first visit to Northern Ireland. At a time when conversations around race, migration, gender, and equality are more urgent than ever across the island, this event will create a vital space for honest dialogue, learning, and reflection.

The evening will feature an important conversation exploring race, gender, human rights, and social justice, hosted by Cllr Lilian Barr SDLP, CEO and Founder of the North West Migrants Forum.

This event is organized as part of the North West Migrants Forum’s Black Heritage and Hidden History Project and the Intercultural Cross-Border Inclusion Programme.

The event is open to the public. We warmly welcome community members, policymakers, activists, allies, and anyone interested in building a more inclusive society.

Tomorrow afternoon, from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM, we invite you to a complimentary screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Stolen. This special event features a post-screening discussion with the film’s director, Margo Harkin, and contributor Marie Arbuckle, and is presented alongside the Unredacted exhibition currently on display in the Whittaker Suite.

Stolen (2023) provides a definitive, clear-eyed examination of Ireland's mother and baby home system. Under the heavy influence of a paternalistic theocracy, more than 80,000 unmarried pregnant women were institutionalized between 1922 and 1998, resulting in the separation of thousands of mothers from their children and the deaths of an estimated 9,000 infants; a mortality rate that frequently dwarfed the national average.

The documentary combines authoritative historical analysis with firsthand accounts from survivors who endured systemic cruelty, forced adoptions, and institutional labor. Crucially, the film highlights the survivors' ongoing, decades-long battle for public awareness, accurate burial tracking, and identity rights.

Today we had the distinct pleasure of welcoming local legend and internationally acclaimed songwriter Phil Coulter to the town. During his visit, Phil took the opportunity to catch up with the Mayor of Derry City & Strabane District sharing stories, memories and cúpla focal le chéile about the place they both love so well.

As a proud recipient of the Freedom of the City, Phil’s enduring contribution to music, culture and community continues to be a source of immense pride for us all. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the town’s rich heritage, strong sense of identity and the people who make it such a special place.

We thank Phil for taking the time to visit and look forward to welcoming him back again soon.
