Police Drones

Police Drones Updates & information from Devon & Cornwall and Dorset Police's Drone Team. Don't report crime here. Please ensure any comments are respectful.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police have been using drones operationally since November 2015. We are using them to assist with operational policing at a variety of incidents such as searching for missing people, crime scene photography, serious road collisions, where it may put an officer at risk (looking over cliffs or in quarries for example) and in assisting other departments for a vari

ety of policing matters. If you fly, or want to fly a drone, have a look at www.DroneSafe.co.uk to get information & tips on how to fly safely and within the law. Comments which are deemed inappropriate, offensive, abusive or insulting will be removed and action taken as required where offences are identified.

Anyone missing Boardmasters yet?

We were there all week providing an to assist with the policing of the festival, providing a live downlink back to police commanders.

A special thanks to the team in Air Traffic Control Cornwall Airport Newquay for being so accommodating with their airspace!

We’ll share some more pics and videos in the coming days.

Please be aware that the ongoing major incident in Plymouth (where suspected unexploded WW2 ordnance has been found) is located inside Restricted Airspace, making it illegal for ALL drones to be flown inside the red area below - this includes sub-250gram drones such as DJI Mini’s.

This airspace has always been restricted due to the Naval Base and has not been implemented by the police in response to this incident.

You may see us operating drones in the area throughout the coming days as we are tasked with assisting the multi-agency response.

We’ve recently finished the annual night flying requalifications for our remote pilots across D&C and Dorset and a great effort by all!

We ran numerous scenarios involving a static ‘person’ (using our thermal imaging mannequin), some that had a moving ‘missing person’ and some scenarios that had both static and a moving person to find.

Once found, the remote pilots had to then guide an officer in, which is harder than it looks in a wooded area, at night, on thermal with very little reference points! Although some of them were able to use the drone’s spotlight to assist (dependent on where we’d hid the mannequin!). The spotlight can be hugely beneficial to assist with searching for and identifying targets, as well as making it safer for everyone on the ground who may otherwise only have a small torch.

National Armed Forces Day in Falmouth saw us deploy 2 drone teams, resulting in:

• 21 hours of total flight time (in a single 10 hour shift).

With the feed from both teams being live streamed back to commanders for the entire day.

Some well planned deconfliction work with the military in the run up to the day by one of our Sgt’s, PS Linzey, meant we were able to remain in the air during the majority of the air displays. This proved invaluable as it meant we were able to assist with an immediate search for a missing child in the middle of one of the air displays. Otherwise, we may have had to pause the display whilst we searched for the child. Flying drones in airspace with live air displays is incredibly dangerous unless everyone knows where each other are and it’s planned in advance.

Each team had 2 drones, so we could do do something called ‘Relief In Place’, meaning the second drone launched and took over from the first drone before it needed to land to change batteries, meaning we had continuous coverage when needed.

Here’s a few clips that we captured throughout the day….

🫡 National Armed Forces Day, Falmouth 🫡

Please be aware that there are airspace restrictions in Falmouth this Saturday (24th June) between 9am - 6pm.

It means no drones can be flown in Falmouth between those times without permission as per the information on the picture below. The restrictions also apply to sub-250gram drones like the DJI Mini’s.

We’re sharing this in the interests of spreading the information for safety, it’s not a restriction that we are in control of.

You may see us at times throughout the day flying around the town as we will be deployed to support the public safety policing operation.

Have a great day and bring sun cream, it’s going to be a scorcher! 😎

**TORBAY RESTRICTED AIRSPACE**

Airspace restrictions are in place for the English Riviera Airshow this weekend. It applies to ALL DRONES including sub-250g drones , such as DJI Mini's.

Active: Midday - 6pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (2nd/3rd/4th June).

We'd highly recommend downloading an app such as 'DroneAssist' and checking it everytime you go out to fly. It shows live airspace information on a map, including other drone users who share where they are flying as well as legal flying restrictions (and ground hazards) so can be really helpful in flying legally and safely.

Please note: This restriction is not controlled by Devon & Cornwall Police, we're sharing for information.
