Over 1 million journeys made on St Helens' publicly controlled bus network! 🚌✨

Here is what public control has delivered so far:
• 97% reliability
• 10%+ boost in punctuality since launch
• Later, longer-running services and new routes like the express X3

Next stop: Wirral on Sunday 25 October! Expect brand-new Metro buses, better hospital links, and extra evening services.

Mayor Steve Rotheram has confirmed two brand-new bus services that will give even more Wirral residents direct public transport access to major healthcare sites.

From 25 October 2026, Wirral’s bus network returns to public control for the first time in four decades as part of Mayor Rotheram’s commitment to delivering a network shaped around local community needs.

These new hospital routes will provide affordable and reliable travel options directly to Arrowe Park Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre:

🚍453 - Links Irby and Heswall directly to Clatterbridge.

🚍483 & 484 - Circular routes connecting Arrowe Park Hospital with West Kirby, Meols, Hoylake, Moreton, Saughall Massie and Upton.

Passengers will also benefit from more evening and weekend services as well as an all-new fleet of publicly owned, UK-built low-emission buses with USB charging, more space for wheelchairs and prams and audio-visual stop announcements.

But on the first day of Liverpool City Region’s new bus franchising system, a new service meant they could finally get out and about on a Sunday.

Chris explains what the change means for her and her husband – and why better bus services could make a real difference to older people who may previously have felt isolated or unable to get out.
