What we’ll do:

We’ll confirm it is us: if you can see a Reading Council account online you can check it is us. We’ll listen:

We’ll read all messages and look to flag-up problems with the most relevant part of the organisation. We’re keen to hear from you. We’ll say when we’ll monitor each account. We’ll not be online 24-hours a day. But we will say when we’ll be online on each social media account we use. We generally monitor our accounts during working hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. If you have an emergency during office hours we recommend you call us 0118 937 3787. If you have an emergency outside of our working hours call our out-of-hours emergency team on 0118 937 3737. We try and respond where we can and when we can help. If possible we’ll respond on the same day but resolving an issue may take longer if we need to find out further information. We don’t always respond to every comment although we always aim to respond to direct service-related queries. We’ll be human and polite

We’ll treat each message with the politeness you’d expect if you were dealing with us face-to-face or on the telephone. We’ll follow people where we can. But this doesn’t mean endorsement. What we’d like you to do in return

We’d like you to be polite. We know that sometimes things don’t go to plan and you’ll want to flag things up with us. But do remember, we’re human and the person monitoring the social media account is only trying to help. So are other people who use social media. We’d like you not be anti-social

We won’t tolerate swearing, threats or abuse online just as we don’t offline. We will remove unlawful or offensive posts. We will not engage with comments that are deliberately designed to be offensive or antagonistic. We won’t always be able to deal with your query on social media. We’ll direct you to other channels instead if this is the case. We will not tolerate personal attacks on an individual on our social media channels. If you’ve a complaint to make against a named person you can do so here on our official complaints page. We’d like you not to spam or advertise. Our social media channels aren’t the place for followers to advertise. Making the same points over and over – otherwise known as spamming – isn’t for our social media. You’ll be better off making a complaint or contacting us another way so we can look into the issue for you. We’d like you to not over-share. If you’ve got an issue we’ll happily look into it. But be careful not to post private information about yourself or others. Of course, most of the time social media works fine but on the rare occasion where you don’t stick to the house rules we reserve the right to delete offending content and block you from contacting us through that route. Our main roads resurfacing programme continues this evening (Wednesday 2 September) on the IDR northbound from the A33 junction.

A full road closure will be in place between 7pm and 1am with a signed diversion in place.

On Thursday, resurfacing will be taking place on the A33 Relief Road, northbound only from the Island Road junction to 175m south, between 7pm-1am.

On Friday and Saturday, works will be taking place on the A33 Relief Road, northbound only, 127m south to Imperial Way, between 7pm-1am both evenings.

Seventeen sections of main road are being resurfaced across the borough in this programme of works, following the Council’s biggest ever investment in road maintenance in Reading, which has taken place over the last six years.

Not all screen content is equal for young children.

🧠 Young children's brains are stimulated much more easily than adults. This means content needs to be made specifically for them.

🐢 Choose slow-paced, predictable content over fast-paced, social media-style videos, which can affect how children learn to concentrate. Use parental controls and avoid social media and AI tools such as chatbots or smart speakers, as there is not yet enough evidence on the effects of these on children’s brains and development

📱 Children also copy what they see. Being mindful of our own phone use and staying present with our children can help them feel secure and supported.

Make sure your bikes are ready for the school run with a visit to Dr Bike tomorrow.

The Avanti Cycling team will be outside M&S in Broad Street carrying out free maintenance checks and basic repairs.

No appointment necessary, just turn up with your bike at the gazebo between 11am-2pm.

The free sessions are sponsored by the Council to support active travel in Reading.

Customers at South Reading and Meadway leisure centres are enjoying an upgraded workout following full gym refurbishments, as part of the Council’s transformation of leisure centres across the town.

The two centres have benefited from £250,000 Council investment to ensure a modern, high-quality training environment for Reading’s communities.

The gym upgrades come after brand new leisure centres were opened at Rivermead and Palmer Park in 2023 and 2022 respectively. GLL runs the four leisure centres on behalf of the Council.

The redesigned gyms at South Reading and Meadway now feature Technogym equipment including strength machines, plate-loaded kit and cardiovascular equipment.

Different machines offer a variety of training, including muscle building and strength development, rehabilitation and general fitness. The cardio suite features treadmills, cross trainers, cycles and stair machines.

If you are struggling with the cost of school uniform, you should first approach the school your child attends as it may have funds available, offer uniforms at a discount or have previously owned uniforms.

If the school is unable to assist, you might be able to get help from First Days Children's Charity. They can help with many items in addition to school uniforms, such as baby essentials, travel items, toiletries, safety equipment, furniture, toys and books.

⚠️ A reminder that Richfield Avenue will be closed from 10.30pm to 1.00am tonight to support a safe exit from the festival site for the 30,000 day-ticket holders

The closure is split into two parts: Richfield Avenue will be closed to all vehicles between its junctions with Cardiff Road and Tessa Road, and it will additionally be closed to all vehicles, except for authorised access, between its junctions with Tessa Road and Caversham Road.
