October marks Black History Month, and we're shining a spotlight on acclaimed author Patrice Lawrence.

Awarded an MBE for Literature, Patrice is the current Waterstones Children's Laureate until 2028 and was BookTrust's Writer in Residence from September 2024 to March 2025. During her residency, she championed reading for pleasure for children facing challenging circumstances.

Speaking about the role, Patrice shared her aim to "give a voice to children pushed to the edge of our society" and to start conversations about how books can change the world for the better.

Patrice has written a number of powerful and thought-provoking books that reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives. One such title is Needle, which explores the challenges, prejudice and inequality faced by a Black child in care.

To find out more about Patrice Lawrence and the inspiring work she does, follow the link in the first comment below.

Whether you're turning pages beneath the trees or listening to an audiobook on a countryside walk, reading outdoors is the perfect way to connect with both literature and the natural world.

Great fun was had by all at Wareham Library this morning for our Summer Reading Challenge LEGO special! 🎵🧱

There were LEGO bricks everywhere and plenty of excited chatter as children created carnival scenes, concert halls and musical instruments. We also designed our own LEGO musician minifigures. 🙂

A perfect way to stay dry on a rainy bank holiday weekend!

Special mentions go to Samuel, who built an impressive concert stunt stage complete with moving cameras, and to one of our parents, who created a fantastic drum kit and xylophone.
