The Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme contributes to poverty reduction in targeted communities Water and Sanitation.

Guyana began receiving Country Project grant funding from the third cycle (BNTF Third Programme) in 1992 and has continued to benefit. Contributions toward BNTF 3 Cycle was confirmed in 1992 at Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Grant Agreement between Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana (GOGY) and the CDB was signed February 16, 1993 and the Basic Needs Trust Fund Implementing Agency (BNTF IA) Guyana became operational on March 27, 1993. For over a quarter of a century, the BNTF Programme has been a pillar in Guyana’s development, working to reduce poverty and support the resilience of our citizens through community-based development projects. BNTF IA Guyana has implemented nearly six hundred (600) sub-projects in the sectors of Education, Health, Basic Community Access and Drainage. Additional targeted areas of focus include: Vulnerable Groups, Commerce, Maintenance, Skills Training and Capacity Building.

🌿 SUPPORTING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN MASHABO VILLAGE

The Government of Guyana, with support from the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF), has funded the construction of a Restaurant in Mashabo Village, Region Two.

The facility will enhance the village's tourism offerings by providing dining services for guests staying at the community's guest house, while creating employment and income-generating opportunities for members of the Mashabo Village Women's Group.

This initiative represents another investment in community development, women's economic empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods.

A new space for children to learn, play and grow!

The Little Diamond Day and Night Early Childhood Development Centre is officially open, creating greater access to safe and dependable childcare for families in Little Diamond and surrounding communities.

The $123.7 million investment, delivered through the Government of Guyana and the Caribbean Development Bank’s Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF), provides a purpose-built facility that can accommodate up to 50 children per shift.

Designed with the needs of young children and their families in mind, the Centre features furnished and equipped learning spaces, a dedicated play area, and provisions to support accessibility and inclusion for children and adults of all abilities.

Reflecting on the journey from an identified community need to the completed facility, BNTF Guyana Project Manager, Karen Roopchand, shared:

“The true value of this investment will be measured by the children and families it serves.”

She also highlighted the importance of the Centre’s day-and-night care model, recognising that many parents work shifts, nights or extended hours and also need access to safe and dependable childcare.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Vindhya Persaud, underscored the importance of early childhood care, particularly for working and single parents, and announced that night-care services will commence on October 1. She also thanked BNTF for its continued partnership.
