The MoFA Summer Internship and Fellowship Programme 2026 held its mid-programme Interaction and Discussion Session at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bringing together cohort members both physically and virtually and senior Ministry officials for a structured research engagement session. All the cohort members presented their research questions, methodologies, and areas of inquiry to officials from across Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal's divisions.

In response, Under Secretaries from respective divisions offered perspectives, identified focal points, and provided guidance to sharpen each research agenda. The session was chaired by Former Ambassador, Joint Secretary Ram Kaji Khadka of the Central Asia, West Asia, and Africa Division.

We are grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal for hosting this seminar and to every official who gave their time and expertise to engage so directly with our cohort's work.

Episode 2 of the MoFA Summer Fellowship and Internship Programme 2026 Speaker Series featured Mr. Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary and Head of the UN and the Specialised Agencies Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal.

Mr. Dhakal offered our cohort members a substantive overview of Nepal's engagement across several critical foreign policy domains including labour diplomacy, climate affairs at the United Nations, mechanisms for economic diplomacy, and the interministerial coordination that underpins Nepal's broader foreign policy objectives. His remarks were particularly valuable in helping cohort members identify key institutions and coordination pathways relevant to their research, while drawing candid attention to the structural challenges that remain.

The Speaker Series remains an important component of the programme, designed to provide cohort members with direct access to the practitioners and decision-makers who shape Nepal's foreign policy and also to ground their research in the realities of governance and diplomacy as it is actually practiced.

The Institute of Foreign Affairs proudly hosted "Women in Diplomatic Leadership: Sharing Experiences to Shape the Future" on the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, bringing together around 80 participants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dignitaries from foreign embassies in Nepal, civil society, and academia, for a rich and inspiring conversation.

We were honoured to welcome Hon. Sumnima Udas, Chairperson of the International Relations and Tourism Committee, Federal Parliament of Nepal, as our Chief Guest, and Mr. Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who joined us as Special Guest and addressed the gathering.
The programme opened with a tone-setting presentation by Ms. Sabita Nakarmi, Under Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, titled "From Milestones to Momentum: Women in Nepal's Foreign Service — A Historical Overview," setting the stage for the discussions that followed.

The heart of the programme was a panel discussion bringing together H.E. Dagny Mjøs, Ambassador of Norway to Nepal; Ms. Meghan Nalbo, Country Representative at The Asia Foundation; SSP Dr. Meena Kunwar of the Nepal Armed Police Force Hospital; Mrs. Bhawani Rana, Past President of the Federation of Woman Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal (FWEAN); and Ms. Durapada Sapkota, Director General at the Department of Consular Services; moderated by Ms. Apekshya Shah, Head of the Central Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Tribhuvan University.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Illa Mainali, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) successfully commenced the Orientation Program for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Nepal Summer Research Internship and Fellowship 2026 on 17 June 2026 at IFA, Tripureshwor.
This inaugural cohort marks an important milestone in strengthening engagement between Nepal’s foreign policy institutions and emerging researchers, professionals, and students. The program received an overwhelming response, with 1,278 applications from Nepal and abroad. Following a highly competitive selection process, 20 outstanding participants were selected for the 2026 cohort.

The cohort is composed of three distinct tracks:
• 10 Internship Participants
• 5 In-Person Research Fellows
• 5 Virtual Research Fellows

The orientation featured welcome remarks by Ms. Rojina Tamrakar, Executive Director of IFA, who highlighted IFA’s role as Nepal’s institution for diplomatic training, policy research, and strategic dialogue. Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai, Foreign Secretary of MoFA, delivered orientation remarks emphasizing fresh ideas, rigorous research, and meaningful engagement with contemporary foreign policy challenges.

Mr. Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of MoFA, provided a comprehensive overview of the Ministry, offering participants valuable insights into Nepal’s diplomatic machinery, institutional priorities, and the evolving global landscape.

Over the next eight weeks, interns and fellows will undertake policy-oriented research across priority areas including strategic affairs, international law, development finance, emerging technologies, climate diplomacy, energy transition, labor migration, diaspora engagement, public diplomacy, and investment promotion. Their work is expected to generate practical and policy-relevant insights contributing to Nepal’s broader foreign policy discourse.

IFA congratulates all selected participants and looks forward to supporting their research, learning, and engagement with Nepal’s diplomatic and policy ecosystem throughout the program.

Call for Expression of Interest: MoFA Nepal Summer Internship 2026

We are pleased to announce the MoFA Nepal Summer Internship 2026, an 8-week voluntary research internship programme initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and hosted by the Institute of Foreign Affairs.

The programme is open to Nepali graduates and professionals, both within Nepal and abroad, who wish to contribute independent policy research directly to Nepal's foreign policy agenda. Selected interns will work across five research themes over eight weeks from mid-June to mid-August 2026, in person in Kathmandu and remotely.

The research themes are Strategic Affairs and Public International Law, Development and Finance, Emerging Technologies, Clean Energy, and Nepali Diaspora

The programme offers a direct engagement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the ministerial level, structured mentorship with senior professionals, access to officials and policy discussions, and the opportunity to publish through the Institute of Foreign Affairs. This is a service opportunity for the nation.`

Nepali citizens, Non-Resident Nepali cardholders, and people of Nepali origin are particularly encouraged to apply. Nepal-based professionals and researchers are equally welcome. We are looking for graduates and professionals with demonstrated expertise.
