One of the major components of the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 (HCWM Project ) is the safe management and disposal of mercury-added products in healthcare facilities to prevent environmental contamination and protect public health.

The HCWM Project, implemented by UNIDO in partnership with DENR-EMB and BAN Toxics, is seeking a 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 to support the development of a database on mercury-added products.

𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗥, '𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗽' 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has signed a five‑year agreement with Rotterdam‑based non‑profit The Ocean Cleanup to remove floating waste from the Pasig River and introduce innovative, low‑cost technologies for scientific data exchange.

This landmark partnership supports President Marcos Jr.’s Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM) project, combining global expertise with local restoration programs to transform the Pasig River into a clean, navigable, and vibrant waterway. With support from the Philippine and Dutch embassies, Energies PH, and local authorities, the initiative will deploy solar‑powered interceptors, strengthen accountability under the Extended Producer Responsibility Act, and equip local agencies with the skills to sustain long‑term river management.

“This agreement brings together local leadership and global expertise to accelerate action in one of the world’s most important coastal regions,” said Boyan Slat, Founder & CEO of The Ocean Cleanup.

By joining The Ocean Cleanup’s 30 Cities Program, the Philippines takes a decisive step toward breaking the cycle of plastic pollution and building sustainable communities for future generations. 🌍✨

BD Corridor ➡️ 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 | What was once a community heavily dependent on forest resources is now building a more sustainable future through biodiversity-friendly livelihoods.

In Santa Cruz, Occidental Mindoro, the Sitio Dapdap Tribong Kababaihan Association (SDTKA), a women-led Biodiversity-Friendly Enterprise (BDFE), is transforming local materials such as nito, uway (rattan), and tigbi into handcrafted baskets, woven products, bracelets, and necklaces that generate income while promoting environmental stewardship.

With support from the DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project, the association has improved its production capacity, enterprise management, and documentation systems, enabling members to strengthen their livelihoods while practicing responsible resource use and conservation.

From gathering forest products for survival to creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, SDTKA's journey demonstrates how empowering communities—especially women—can help protect biodiversity while improving lives.

Eligible CSOs, cooperatives, academic institutions, social enterprises, start-ups, MSMEs, and private sector innovators may apply for grants of up to USD 100,000 (CSO Grants) and USD 40,000 (Innovation Challenge) for projects on plastic circularity, organic waste management, and green tourism.

On 26 May 2026, the DENR and partner stakeholders formalized a Memorandum of Agreement in Agusan del Sur to advance Sustainable Land Management (SLM) under the DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project. The signing underscores the importance of collaborative action in addressing land degradation, promoting ecosystem restoration, and supporting climate-resilient communities.

The event brought together local government units, people’s organizations, and DENR field offices, reaffirming shared responsibility in implementing SLM practices that balance environmental protection with livelihood opportunities. By strengthening institutional partnerships, the MOA ensures that communities in Agusan del Sur benefit from improved land use planning, capacity-building, and sustainable resource management.

City Government of Ormoc is showing how circular economy can become a way of life. With support from the EU-PH Green Economy Partnership, UNDP Philippines, and DILG Philippines, the city has embedded circular principles into its development plans—turning waste recovery, repair hubs, and community‑led initiatives into engines of resilience and sustainable growth.

From barangay‑level material recovery upgrades to the recognition of informal recyclers and repair workers, Ormoc demonstrates that inclusive action restores dignity, creates green livelihoods, and reduces waste leakage. Youth groups, civil society, and private sector partners are also engaged, proving that transformation succeeds when everyone has a seat at the table.

On 30 May, the Korea International Cooperation Agency Philippines - KOICA 필리핀사무소 joined the PhilKOFA Silver Tree Planting Activity at the DENR La Mesa Watershed Nursery A, marking PhilKOFA’s 25th Anniversary.

🌱 With support from Quezon City Government and DENR, around 50 participants planted 500 seedlings, strengthening partnerships and fostering camaraderie while advancing greener, climate‑resilient communities.

🤝 The event highlighted KOICA’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship together with its alumni network and local partners.
