Today May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. This celebration was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Coronavirus : Belgium outlines its exit strategy | Coronavirus COVID-19

Why is Belgium's death rate considered “so high’’?

In recent international newspapers it was expressed that Belgium’s coronavirus death toll stretched out distinctively beyond other EU countries. Some studies even assessed that Belgium was the country in the world with the most people dying from Covid-19 relative to its population size . Is this a correct assessment of the situation?

First of all, it seems important to state that every country uses different methods to calculate how many people are dying exactly from this novel coronavirus. A more standardized method could be explored.

Belgian authorities decided to be fully transparent, and even make honest and educated estimates about this death toll. So they include not only deaths that are formally confirmed to be virus-related, but even those death causes linked to the virus, with a high probability based on circumstantial medical evidence, and this whether the victims were tested or not.

More than half of such cases were in nursing homes. Of those, only 4.5% were tested and confirmed to have been infected, yet all were counted in the national tally since they were clearly showing several corona-related medical symptoms.

This method has certainly its flaws but it looks to be the most transparent way of counting fatalities attributable to the virus. These last days, we see more and more countries starting to copy this Belgian surveillance model, allowing a better image of the severity of the overall situation.

We feel better tracing of the number of infected and deaths linked to the Covid-19 is the right way to monitor our policies and prepare the return to a safer situation. The Belgian Government has strong faith in the resilience of its healthcare system and in the prudent exit-strategy it is implementing to go back to a more normal way of life.
