đź’› DIAPER & WIPE DONATION REQUEST đź’›

Families at the Anacortes Family Center face many barriers — financial hardship, transportation, lack of support, and more. One everyday struggle many parents face is providing diapers and wipes for daycare, while also trying to keep enough at home.

Diapers are not cheap, and right now we need your help.

Current needs:
🧷 Size 4 diapers
🧷 Size 5 diapers
🧷 Size 6 diapers
🧷 Size 6+ Pull-Ups
🧻 Baby wipes

Every donation helps ease the burden for local families and ensures children have what they need to stay in daycare and thrive.

Donations can be dropped off during business hours or call (360) 292-2993 for more information.

Thank you for supporting families in our community ❤️

DO YOU HAVE AN EXTRA COFFEE MAKER?
For families in our shelter, the little things make a big difference. A simple coffee maker can bring warmth, comfort, and a moment of peace in the middle of a challenging day:

We need 4-5 very simple coffee makers
- Easy to operate
- Drip coffee makers are preferred
- New or gently used

Thank you for helping our families feel at home!

WE'RE FEELING HAPPY AND PROUD! You may know by now that we team with the Anacortes School District to ensure that housing-insecure kids have access to a free, appropriate education (as promised by the McKinney-Vento act). This means students get help with transportation and a steady food supply, for starters.

Kids should also have a hand with their studies when they need it, and some youngsters who have moved frequently may especially need help. Therefore (drum roll), we started up a Homework Lab at AFC for McKinney-Vento kids! In its first months of existence, these afternoon sessions have helped one student sharpen up reading and math skills. This diligent youngster came to AFC weekly to work with volunteer tutors and it shows! Teachers at the student's school are very impressed with the progress. We hope to be able to serve more McKinney-Vento kids from Anacortes in the future. If you'd like to know more, contact [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW AFC and several non-profits in Skagit County work together to enrich each other? The mission of Brigid Collins Family Support Center--to strengthen community health and resilience by providing comprehensive support to children and their families--fits nicely with our mission. We reach out to their Mount Vernon office to share ideas, resources, and needs.

AFC staff and a few volunteers recently took Stewards of Children training through Brigid Collins, whose staff presents this program developed by a group called Darkness to Light. Stewards of Children teaches adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. We are mandated reporters of suspected abuse, as are other helping professionals in Anacortes, and we wanted to take our knowledge a step further. Children often don't disclose abuse verbally, and adults who suspect a youngster is being harmed sometimes don't know what to do. Stewards of Children addressed those topics and others! We are more ready than ever to help keep the children of Anacortes safe.

Thanks, Brigid Collins, for training us, and to Darkness to Light for developing this nationally-recognized program!

HOW CAN WE MAKE "TURNING A UNIT" FASTER and easier? You probably know that when AFC clients move on from their apartment we do everything in our power to make it available to a new family within hours. There are people living in motels, cars, and tents waiting!

Facilities Assistant Kelli just organized and stocked a closet with supplies for volunteers that help us with this task! That way, even if Kelli is not available to lead you and other volunteers, you can start the process anyway. Wait! So you haven't helped us get a unit ready for new tenants? Just contact [email protected] and get on the list. It means we'll contact you when we need a unit turned and you can join in as you wish. It's a fun, immediate-gratification thing to do!

DO YOU HAVE AN EXTRA HOUR? LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO WITH A FRIEND? We sure could use some weeding help. This task could be easy for you--just show up and volunteer when it fits your day--but it's hard for us to get done with everything we have on our plates. If you'd consider stopping by to pull weeds on our grounds, we would really appreciate it! And the impact of your time here will really be noticed!

If you have questions about this, email [email protected]. Thanks!

CLIENT JANNEA SAYS: "WE ARE DOING GOOD" We have a new client story for you! Anacortes native Jannea and her two boys are back where they belong, right here in permanent housing in her hometown. It took some work--and support from AFC--to save the money needed for a local apartment and sharpen her life skills, but she has done it!

Always responsible, Jannea found herself in a tight spot when she and her partner split up. She had a steady job, paid her bills on time, and cared for her sons properly, but finding a secure home she could afford was just not happening. After two apartments were snatched out from under her, Jannea brought her family to AFC's Emergency Shelter. From her new home in Anacortes, Jannea reflects that the hard times came with some lessons for her boys: appreciation for everyone's situation, the wisdom of taking time to plan your path, and the drive to give back. No wonder Jannea says "We are doing good!"

Go to Anacortesfamily.org/client-stories/jannea and click Client Stories in the menu to read more about Jannea and our other program graduates!

GED, HERE I COME! One of our clients is headed back to school to get her GED! We are excited and happy for her, and she only needs two more classes to finish! To get it done she needs a laptop computer. Do any of you have a used one you could send our way? It would help our client take this important step toward a solid career and a better life.

If you have a laptop to donate, please come by our office at 2702 Commercial Avenue during business hours, or email [email protected] for more information.

DID YOU KNOW we are always expanding services for walk-in clients? Not everyone who's unsheltered can come live at AFC immediately and go through our rigorous program, for a variety of reasons. Over the years we've added to our list of offerings for people living homeless, whether they're just passing through town or waiting for a unit at AFC or another shelter in Skagit County.

We put together this list so people who come through our doors can see at a glance what's available. YOU make all this possible, whether you're a major donor supplying funds for a shower space or furniture for a unit, or you're one of many community members who drop off food and other essentials we can bundle up for walk-ins.

Thank you for joining us in our mission to help everyone!

THE KIND PEOPLE AT THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM in Burlington have provided a birthday “kit” for dozens—if not hundreds—of AFC kids by now. For some youngsters staying with us it’s the most complete birthday they’ve ever had, including cake, ice cream, juice, gifts, and themed decorations.

The Children's Museum folks don't stop there, though. They include a couple of new outfits for the birthday kid, and they bring a gift they know will be a hit. Our most recent birthday celebration was for a sweet 3 year old staying with us, and we passed along info about what the little girl loves best. So you can be sure there's at least one new doll in those gift bags!

We can't thank the Children's Museum enough for establishing this joyful tradition. It is such a help to parents to know their child's birthday will be taken care of with no money and shopping needed. And it helps us too!
