WE STILL NEED FUTONS with metal frames! We know there probably aren't dozens in the community waiting to be donated, but if you happen to have one to give we could really use it. AREN'T OUR LOCAL BANKS JUST SUPER?! We are so fortunate that banks in Anacortes really care about the community! There are a few we'd like to recognize for going beyond the call of their regular duties to invest in our clients.

PEOPLES BANK has stepped up for years to assist our clients--often behind the scenes--in getting their banking routines off on the right foot. For our Transitional Program clients, Liz Svoboda of HERITAGE BANK has taught a 6-week Financial Education class.

Most recently, Racheal Meloche, Branch Manager of BANNER BANK, presented our clients a very interesting 4-week class on preventing fraud. Racheal and her team will be returning next month with another timely topic. Rhylie Frye, Branch Manager of the local KEY BANK, led two Life Skills sessions on financial empowerment and banking basics, including budgeting, credit, and debt management.

To say that AFC's clients are grateful for this essential education, offered by local bankers who really care, is an understatement. Thank you all so much!

OUR OWN SCHOOL REPORT CARD! You may know we partner with local schools to deliver services for students through the McKinney Vento/Foster Care Program. That mouthful basically ensures that kids who have experienced unstable housing or who have been moved into foster care receive school-related services just like every other student. It's a challenge for schools to make this happen--that's why Pat Carlson, AFC's Associate Director of Youth Services, steps in to help. Student needs range from transportation to the school they should be attending to supplemental food and more.

Here's a recap of the year: Pat spent more than 180 hours in meetings essential to making the program work--holding individual sessions with students, supporting students in meetings with teachers and administrators, and attending ASD meetings as part of the extended team.

Of course, making the MCKV/Foster Care Program work in Anacortes schools takes more than meetings! Pat enrolled 90+ students in the program this year. This means she helped set up bus service where needed, found school supplies, secured referrals to medical/dental services, pointed families to food support, and even paved the way for "angel tree" gifts at Christmas.

Here's what Pat has to say about her school year, "Aside from all those hours etc., I hope folks understand that it's most important to me to sit with the kids and listen, developing a positive relationship with them so I can be of help not only to their families but the children themselves!"

Teaming up with ASD schools is a big role to fill, and it's so important! We consider it part of our focus on preventing homelessness down the road.

Pat deserves a bit of a breather this summer, don't you think?!

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF SERVICE AND CREATIVITY 💙🎨
For 35 years, the Kiwanis K-Kids at Fidalgo Elementary School have been making a difference in our community. Founded as the very first K-Kids group on the West Coast, these incredible 3rd–5th grade students have dedicated themselves to service projects that help others.
Led by the amazing Patty Johnson, the K-Kids chose several years ago to support the Anacortes Family Center in a truly special way. With the generous guidance, talent, and volunteer time of art teacher Joy Pesaturo, students have created beautiful artwork that now brightens our hallways, apartments, and the Discover Center.
Their colorful creations do more than decorate our spaces. They bring smiles, comfort, and joy to the families we serve. They help transform our buildings into welcoming homes and remind our families that they are supported by a caring community.
Thank you, K-Kids, Patty Johnson, and Joy Pesaturo, for sharing your creativity, kindness, and hearts with AFC. Your artwork has touched countless lives and continues to make our families feel at home every day. ❤️

Last week, our AFC staff had the opportunity to learn how to create beautiful origami flowers, a craft inspired by the stunning flowers Cathy Enns handcrafted and donated for our Mother's Day celebration last month.

Cathy's thoughtful gift added warmth, color, and countless smiles to a special day dedicated to honoring the incredible mothers we serve. The flowers were such a hit that our staff couldn't resist wanting to learn how to make them ourselves!

For many of the women at Anacortes Family Center, Mother's Day can be a difficult reminder of the challenges they face. Cathy's handmade flowers helped create a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere where mothers could feel valued, appreciated, and celebrated.

We are so grateful for community members like Cathy who share their creativity, generosity, and kindness to make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Cathy, for helping make our Mother's Day celebration so meaningful and memorable. 💐

MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMING TO TOWN! Exciting news--AFC will be breaking ground later this summer on a project we can't wait to start. Four "Anacortes Cottages" will be built in town on land gifted to us by the very generous Nancy Chapman in her estate. These homes will be located in an established neighborhood within walking distance to schools and parks, offering safety for families as well as affordability.

Why are we starting another affordable housing project? The obvious answer is that many working people are simply priced out of living here. From our specific viewpoint, AFC's affordable homes are the ultimate destinations in our continuum of care for many clients. They work so hard to transform their lives--it makes sense that there are homes in our community they can transition to when their time with us is complete. We want to make it possible for our families to know they belong while they create long term stability.

DRESSERS NEEDED FOR NEW FAMILY:

Over the next few days, a new family will be moving into one of our housing units at the Anacortes Family Center. As they prepare for this new chapter, we are looking for 2 new or gently used dressers to help make their house feel like home.

Something as simple as a dresser can make a big difference for a family working to rebuild stability and create a comfortable space for their children.

THREE CHEERS FOR JON! We are grateful to volunteer Jon for coming to AFC to do some weeding and mowing. If you've been on campus lately you may have noticed our bumper crop of dandelions, clover, and more--it was downright embarrassing. Jon came in to help us out and we appreciate it! All it takes is an hour and a bucket--would you like to pull some weeds for us too? We're pretty certain to have areas that need attention any day of any week. DID YOU KNOW we often stay in touch with and help out former clients? It's not unusual for AFC graduates to reach out to us once in a while. These are tough times for many people, former clients included. We're happy when they call on us--we know their background and we're glad they feel safe telling us about a need they have. Whether it's supplemental food, clothing, household items, or referrals to other resources, we're here for our clients before and after their stay with us. The little bit of time we spend with graduates helps them stay on course in their new lives and strengthens our community too!

IVY IS FINALLY "STANDING ON SOLID GROUND." Ivy's story reminds us how a few missing skills can add up to someone living homeless. That's what happened to Ivy, who recently moved into her own place with her son after just 60 days in AFC's program.

Prescribed pain medication for a health issue and faced with other profound challenges, Ivy slid from using to abusing for a time. Then she rededicated herself to living a clean, productive life. But at 41, and even though she had a steady job, how would she fix her credit? And learn to budget and save? And hardest of all, how could she find an apartment she could afford?
