We are asking our Alaska Native community to share what events, experiences, or topics should be recognized through a monument in the Ngiisdla Garden at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. In the Xaad Kíl language, Ngiisdla means “to heal.” It is deeply important to us that this space reflects the voices, guidance, and values of our community. In 2023, a Boarding School Healing Totem Pole was raised. We are currently working on a Veterans Monument and a monument honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples. We'd like your input for the remaining 7 monuments. Please share your thoughts by completing our short survey by August 16, 2026, at 11:59PM.

Anchorage School District Families in need of school supplies are encouraged to attend the Helping Us Give School Supplies (HUGSS) Back-to-School Jam on Friday, July 31. Students do not have to be present to get supplies.

HUGSS is free and open to all ASD students and families. Students can receive a backpack filled with essential school supplies to help them start the school year ready to learn!

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Begich Middle School. Doors open at 10 a.m. for pre-registered attendees.

Pre-registration is open until 1,000 households have registered or Sunday, July 26, whichever comes first. Pre-registration is not required but is highly recommended, as it makes the check-in process quicker and easier. To pre-register, simply complete the online form (see comments for link).

Families who pre-register are encouraged to arrive early, as school supplies are available while supplies last.

Free hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available on a first-come first-served basis.

Anchorage Tlingit & Haida Voters — Election Voting is Open!

Voting is open for the 2026 Tlingit & Haida Tribal Election, and your vote helps shape the future of our Tribe and ensures that Anchorage voices are represented.

Just like in previous elections, all voting is done online.

Today, we proudly observe Elizabeth Peratrovich Day and honor the enduring legacy of a Tlingit leader whose courage changed Alaska’s history.

On February 16, 1945, Elizabeth Peratrovich stood before the Alaska Territorial Legislature and delivered powerful testimony that led to the passage of the Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act — the first law of its kind in the United States. Her advocacy affirmed the dignity, rights, and humanity of Alaska Native peoples.

Her words continue to remind us that civil rights are not given — they are fought for, defended, and upheld by strong voices and committed communities.

As the Anchorage Tribes Tlingit & Haida Indians of Alaska, we recognize Elizabeth Peratrovich’s leadership as a reflection of our values: equity, justice, and responsibility to future generations.

Today, we honor her bravery.
We teach her story.
We carry her legacy forward.
