Today is Instructional Assistant Appreciation Day! Asheville City Schools wants to take a moment to honor the dedicated team members who bring so much care, energy, and support to our schools.

Whether they are stepping in to help a student, giving targeted small-group lessons, or partnering with teachers to create a welcoming classroom, our Instructional Assistants do critical work behind the scenes. Their patience and encouragement make our entire district stronger.

Mark your calendars for the Reading Opens the World Family Literacy Fair happening this Sunday! 30,000 FREE books will be given to students, families, and educators in Western North Carolina. Families can select up to 10 books per student and educators can choose up to 50 books for their classroom!

When: Sunday, September 27 from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

We are thrilled to share that Asheville City Schools’ Elementary Schools and Middle School have been voted “Best in Asheville” in the 2026 Asheville Media Group’s Best of Asheville Awards!

This incredible honor comes on the heels of our 2025 recognition, where our elementary schools and high school were also named Best in Asheville.

Happy Arts in Education Week! 🎨🖌️🌟

We are celebrating with an update on our Asheville City Schools Tree of Promise- a tile mosaic coming soon to Asheville High and SILSA!

During Convocation, staff designed over 600 individual clay leaves inspired by our theme, ‘Rooted in Purpose, Growing Scholars’. This week, staff and student volunteers have been busy glazing each leaf before firing and final installation. A huge shoutout to Kristina Shriver and Mindy McCormick, arts and ceramics teachers at Asheville High and SILSA, for their amazing vision, leadership, and hard work bringing this project to life.

Every day offers us opportunities to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and incredible contributions of Latine and Hispanic communities, but especially this month. From music and art to science and leadership, their impact has shaped our district, city, country, and world, in countless ways. Let’s take this time to honor the stories and inspire future generations to embrace their heritage with pride. We can’t wait to see what lessons our teachers have planned this month to honor and celebrate the rich cultural history of Latine and Hispanic communities.

We LOVED seeing the new after-school Strings Program in action! Thanks to our partners at the Asheville City Schools Foundation, middle schoolers at AMS can learn and continue to develop their musical skills in In Real Life Afterschool!

ACSF’s mission is to do ‘whatever it takes’ for our students to thrive and we are so grateful they are providing free after-school opportunities like this in IRL.
