August is right around the corner and we are so excited to welcome our students and staff back into the classroom on August 24! This year, secondary students in both middle and high school will have late starts on Wednesdays once a month. This means that students in grades 6th-12th will start school at 10:30 AM to give our secondary staff important additional planning and professional development time. Summer learning at Asheville Middle School was next level as students dove headfirst into hands-on experiences by building solar cars, flying drones, dissecting sharks, and planting campus gardens. They even mastered practical life skills like changing a tire and cooking healthy meals. This is our Portrait of a Scholar in action- showing what it means to be curious thinkers, effective communicators, and supportive crew members who think critically about the world around them. A huge thank you goes out to our incredible staff and community partners for making this summer unforgettable!

This Saturday, July 11, The Grey Eagle will host the inaugural Radio Free Eagle, a special R.E.M. tribute concert that brings our community together to champion local musicians and Asheville Middle School students! This community-driven event features a fantastic lineup of regional artists putting their own unique spin on classic hits, with all proceeds benefiting the Asheville Middle School 8th Grade Capstone Trip to Washington, D.C.!

This annual trip is an essential educational experience, giving our eighth graders an unforgettable opportunity to step out of the classroom and engage directly with the history, government, and cultural institutions they’ve studied all year.

This event beautifully showcases the power of collaboration when our local arts scene, iconic independent businesses like The Grey Eagle, and public schools unite. By bringing together creative talent and community resources, this partnership builds a stronger support system that ensures our students have every opportunity to thrive.

We can’t wait to see you Saturday!

Our rising 5th and 6th graders in the Choose Your Own Adventure Summer Program traded the classroom for the outdoors last week, taking an exciting field trip to the Botanical Gardens for a hands-on environmental science lesson!

In partnership with RiverLink, students explored our local watershed to become real-world field scientists for the day.

Students learned that because certain organisms can only thrive in healthy freshwater, their presence acts as a natural indicator of water health. They successfully uncovered salamanders, crawfish, and other tiny creatures, discovering firsthand how the presence of these organisms helps identify water quality.

RiverLink’s environmental education program is built on exactly this kind of immersive experience. By connecting youth to local watersheds, they are fostering a love and appreciation for our natural world. A huge thank you to our teachers and RiverLink for providing such an impactful, unforgettable learning experience for our students!
