The Correspondent: Literature Lecture & Discussion
"Reading about Reading in Virginia Evans’s The Correspondent"
Wednesday, June 3rd @ 2:00 pm in the Community Room

Join us for our annual literature lecture and discussion, featuring one of the most popular books of the past year: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. Our lecture leader will be Aimee Pozorski, Professor of English at Central Connecticut State University.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Larry McMurtry on December 10, 2018, Sybil Van Antwerp, the tortured heroine of Virginia Evans’s The Correspondent, describes her experiences reading McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. She writes to him, “I was sitting there thinking here in my hands is a book about disappointment.” Sybil’s description of reading McMurtry’s novel reflects the readers’ own experience of reading The Correspondent. During our discussion, we will consider the ways this brilliant epistolary novel illustrates not only Sybil’s disappointments but also her reading preferences—and discover our own reading preferences in the process.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Avon Library.

A Novel Crime: Deborah Levison in conversation with Marilyn Simon Rothstein
Tuesday, June 2nd @ 6:30 pm in the Community Room.

Join us for an in-person event to celebrate the release of A NOVEL CRIME, by Deborah Levison. Deborah will be in conversation with Marilyn Simon Rothstein.

About the book: A Novel Crime is a dark comedy and thriller about a struggling romance writer, Marcy Jo Codburn, who blackmails a famous author, Francesca Barber, into co-authoring a book, leading to a spiraling, criminal partnership filled with blackmail, kidnapping, and murder in the cutthroat publishing world. The novel satirizes the publishing industry through its witty and acerbic take on literary ambition, featuring unlikable but compelling characters and a plot that blurs the lines between fiction and reality.

About Deborah Levison: After attending the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto, Deborah penned the travel column for a national newspaper before working in public relations, liaising with press, foreign diplomats, corporate investors and the public. Since relocating to Connecticut she has been published in local and national media, both as a director at a strategic communications firm and as a freelance writer. She lives in Trumbull with her family.

About Marilyn Simon Rothstein: Marilyn grew up in New York City, earned a degree in journalism from NYU, began her writing career at Seventeen magazine, married a man she met in an elevator and owned an award-winning advertising agency for more than twenty-five years. She is the author of four novels, and lives in Avon.

Books by both authors will be available for sale & signing at this event. Please register @ https://www.avonctlibrary.info/event/deborahlevison/
