The BFD has 188 personnel, including Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs, Administrative Personnel, and Fire Marshals. BFD has 151 personnel, including firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, administrative personnel, and fire inspectors. BFD also oversees the City/County 911 Communications Center, which has 37 employees. Yesterday, the Billings Fire Department DNRC crew assisted with a wildland fire near the Captain Clark Fishing Access Site in Custer. The response was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies.

The Billings Fire Department recently partnered with BNSF Railway for specialized hands-on rail emergency response training. Firefighters had the opportunity to gain firsthand experience with locomotive systems, patient removal techniques, railcar identification, and safe operations around active rail lines.

Training opportunities like this strengthen our ability to respond safely and effectively to railroad emergencies while building strong partnerships within our community. A special thank you to BNSF Railway and Peter Killman for sharing their expertise and helping provide this valuable training experience.

By continually training for a wide variety of emergency situations, we ensure our firefighters are prepared to protect the citizens of Billings when it matters most.

The Billings Fire Department would like to recognize Captain Mamayek, Engineers Laszloffy, Ferguson, and L. Johnson, Firefighters Sullivan, Welton, Beaver, and Proffitt, along with the Dispatchers of the Billings 911 Communications Center and the American Medical Response Billings crew, for their outstanding actions that resulted in a CPR save.

When a person experiences cardiac arrest, immediate, high-quality CPR is one of the most important factors in improving the chance of survival. From the moment the 911 call was received through the delivery of advanced patient care, the professionalism, teamwork, and rapid actions of everyone involved made a lifesaving difference when every second counted.

With summer temperatures in full swing, Firefighter Ash, Engineer Johnson, and Deputy Fire Marshal Biggins brought Truck 77 to the Strawberry Festival, where they welcomed visitors for apparatus tours and provided a refreshing water spray to help everyone beat the heat!

The Billings Fire Department recently conducted comprehensive water-shuttle and drafting operations training to enhance firefighter preparedness for incidents in areas with limited or no fire hydrant systems.

The training focused on establishing and maintaining a continuous water supply through coordinated water-shuttle operations using water tenders and portable water tanks. Firefighters practiced drafting water from portable water tanks, using fire apparatus equipped with drafting hose and appliances. These skills are critical during rural structure fires, wildland-urban interface incidents, and other emergencies where a reliable water source must be established quickly.

The exercise also served as an opportunity to train firefighters on the driving and operation of mobile water supply apparatus (Water Tenders) and to evaluate equipment performance and operational procedures.
