The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) recognized several North Dakota University System (NDUS) leaders during its Sept. 24 meeting for their dedication to advancing organizational success, culture-building and lasting impact. Three executive or administrative and managerial employees received the University System Leadership Excellence Award, a new program initiated by the NDUS in partnership with the SBHE this year.

The award honors leaders whose contributions, vision and innovation have made significant and lasting positive impacts on higher education in North Dakota.

“We are fortunate to have such strong and visionary leaders across the North Dakota University System,” said NDUS Commissioner Brent Sanford. “The recipients of this Leadership Excellence Award have played important roles in strengthening our institutions, cultivating student success and fostering collaboration and innovation that benefits higher education throughout North Dakota.”

The North Dakota University System (NDUS) reported stable enrollment across its 11 colleges and universities according to official Fall 2026 census data.

Systemwide enrollment totaled 47,377 students, generating 36,030 full-time equivalent (FTE) students and 530,561 scheduled credit hours. Compared with Fall 2025, headcount, FTE and credit hours each declined by less than one-half of one percent, reflecting continued enrollment stability across the system.

“NDUS institutions continue to demonstrate resilience in a challenging demographic environment,” said NDUS Commissioner Brent Sanford. “While enrollment metrics are essentially flat from a year ago, we continue to see encouraging trends in several key student populations and remain focused on expanding access and workforce opportunities for North Dakotans.”

Fargo Public Schools and North Dakota State University have launched a partnership to give teachers a chance to earn a master’s degree and develop further as leaders.

NDSU President Marshall Stewart and FPS Superintendent Cory Steiner signed the agreement for the Teacher Leadership Academy during a ceremony at the NDSU Library on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
