ALICE is a movement that recognizes 42% of hardworking individuals who make too much income for government assistance, but not enough to live on.

One emergency expense can put an ALICE individual into financial crisis. When we recognize ALICE, we change lives.

April is for ALICE 💛

This month, we’re shining a light on ALICE.

Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

ALICE represents hardworking individuals and families who earn too much to qualify for assistance, but not enough to afford basic household essentials.

They are your neighbors. Your coworkers. Your community.

📊 Throughout April, we’ll be sharing stories, local data, and insights from across the High Country.

👉 Stay tuned.

🎉 Today we’re sending the biggest birthday shout-out to Meredith Perry, the Watauga Long-Term Recovery Group Disaster Case Management Supervisor.

Meredith and I first met in January 2025 as two exhausted Gen X Swifties who care deeply about one thing: making sure hurricane survivors are safe, stabilized, and supported as they rebuild their lives.

Before officially stepping into her role in August 2025, Meredith was already volunteering as a Disaster Case Manager for the Watauga Long Term Recovery Group while caring for her family and helping neighbors navigate recovery. That’s just who she is ... someone who quietly shows up, works hard, and does the job with a smile.

Meredith, we are so grateful for your heart, your leadership, and the compassion you bring to this work. Watauga County and the High Country is stronger because of you.

💛 Happy Birthday, Meredith! We hope your day is as wonderful as the care you give to our community.

🎉 High Country United Way is excited to welcome Linda Slade back to High Country United Way as our new Director of Grants and Foundation Giving!

Linda previously led High Country United Way as Executive Director from 2008–2014 and has spent years strengthening communities across North Carolina through leadership roles with the New River Conservancy and as President of United Way of Gaston County from 2018–2021.

She “retired” back to the High Country… briefly 😉 most recently serving as Special Projects Coordinator in Planning with the High Country Council of Governments.

Linda brings deep United Way experience, strong regional relationships, and a whole lot of heart for this community. We’re lucky to have her back!

Welcome back, Linda! 💙
