Last week, I joined the Plymouth Center for Active Living - COA for their annual Volunteer Appreciation Lunch! This annual event recognizes the amazing volunteers who dedicate hours each week to keep the CAL running, from Meals of Wheels, to front desk reception, to counseling, the volunteers are the backbone of the CAL.

State Rep. Michelle Badger and I presented citations to the following individuals who went above and beyond the past year:

Peter Stracuzzi helps to deliver Meals of Wheels, helping ensure Plymouth seniors have access to meals.

Mary Stracuzzi who helps ensure seniors have access to food through both Meals on Wheels and the CAL Cafe.

Marie Smyth who works the front desk reception, providing a welcoming environment to all who visit and contributing to the monthly newsletter.

Maureen Wolf who provides volunteer SHINE Counseling, helping seniors to navigate the complex world of Medicare.

Thank you to each and every individual who contributes to the daily needs of the CAL and the senior community of Plymouth. On behalf of the 12th Plymouth district, thank you for all you do!

I had the chance to join my colleagues in the Plymouth delegation at last week’s Plymouth Lions Club meeting, to provide an update on the State of the Commonwealth. This was a great discussion where we heard the concerns of many of the members, spoke about what is going on at the State level, and heard about the great work the Lions club is doing. Thank you for the invite!

Last Thursday, was the 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Day in the State House. The Healey-Driscoll Administration created Military Appreciation Day in May 2025 to honor those who proudly serve both our country and communities. Each legislator is invited to nominate a member of their local military community to be honored during the ceremony.

I was humbled to honor Kathleen Keegan of Pembroke as this year's 12th Plymouth District Military Appreciation nominee. Kathleen served 28 years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and fully exemplifies the qualities of service to her community, her fellow service members and her country. She is the Vice Commander of the Pembroke American Legion, serving veterans and their families, she Chairs the Pembroke Tree Lighting committee and the Pembroke Celebrates fireworks celebration, and she is a real estate agent in Pembroke, helping to connect residents with their dream homes. From her military service to her deep commitment to her community, I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. While Kathleen couldn't attend the celebration in the State House, it was very inspiring to present her with her award in front of last evening's American Legion meeting, in front of so many of the veterans she helps each and every day.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, I want to share my commitment to strengthening our mental health care system and ensuring that those who need it can access the right care for them. Over 50 million adults and 8 million young people experience a mental health care condition each year. Half do not get the care they need.

Mental health care is health care and should be treated as such. Mental health care saves lives and we need to make it easier to access. I will continue to fight for the mental health care workforce, mental health care integration into our primary care system, and fight against the stigma that mental health faces, during Mental Health Awareness month and every other month. Thank you to inseparable action for their advocacy in supporting strong mental health care policy.

On Saturday morning, my team joined the Plympton Historical Society to recognize May 23 as Deborah Sampson Day. Deborah Sampson was born in Plympton in 1760 and disguised herself as a man in order to join the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, serving under the name Robert Shirtliff. She served for 17 months, only being discovered when she required medical treatment for a fever. I joined my colleague, Senator Dylan Fernandes in proving a resolution passed by both chambers recognizing the day.

We also recognized the inaugural Deborah Sampson Award, given to a woman from Plympton who exemplifies the ideals and spirit of Deborah Sampson. I was honored to provide a citation to this year’s winner, Chief Cheryl Duddy of the Plympton Fire department. I have worked with Chief Duddy for years, serving the Town of Plympton and she is someone who is deeply committed to the residents of the Town, always steps up and answers the call to action, and truly exemplifies the spirit of the award. Congratulations, Chief Duddy!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, selflessness and dedication will never be forgotten. May we strive to live up to the ideals they fought and died in service of.

I want to highlight the final two bills the House passed this past week. The first makes it unlawful for a person to manufacture, modify, sell, transfer, possess or operate a robotic device equipped or mounted with a weapon. It also makes it unlawful for a person to use a robotic device to threaten to commit a crime, criminally harass a person, or physically restrain or attempt to physically restrain a person. It is critical that our laws keep up with technological advancements. Arming robots and drones with weapons is a threat to the safety of all residents and I am proud to take action before an incident requires us to act.

The second bill requires newborns be screened and tested for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) and tasks the DPH with developing regulations and best practices for screening for cCMV, as well as informing the public and health care professionals about the dangers of this treatable condition. Early detection and access to information can help change the course of a newborn's life through treatment and early intervention.

Thank you to the Speaker, Chairman Michlewitz, Chair Day, Chair Decker and all of those whose leadership and forward thinking helped bring these important bills to the House floor.
