I'm honored to have been appointed by the Senate Minority Leader to serve on the Chapter 70 Foundation Budget Review Commission, a commission tasked with examining how Massachusetts calculates the funding needed for public education from prekindergarten through grade 12.
The commission will review the state’s foundation budget and consider whether changes are needed to ensure that school districts have the resources necessary to provide educational programs and services that meet the Commonwealth’s goals.
The commission’s work will include examining:
• How the foundation budget is calculated
• The costs associated with providing educational services to students
• How education funding resources can be used most effectively
• Different approaches to efficient and effective allocation of education funding
• Potential legislative or regulatory changes to the state’s school funding formula
The commission is also required to hold at least four public hearings across geographically diverse regions of Massachusetts before issuing its recommendations. Its report will be submitted to legislative leaders and committees and made publicly available.
This is an important opportunity to examine the way Massachusetts funds its public schools and to consider how the Chapter 70 formula can reflect the educational needs of communities across the Commonwealth.
I look forward to bringing the Central Massachusetts education perspective to this commission, listening to educators and communities across the Commonwealth, and contributing to a thoughtful review of how we can best support our students and schools.
