Thank you Texas Heritage Trails for featuring our amazing courthouse! Come see this amazing courthouse and visit the Johnson County Courthouse Museum!
Today on our downtown and courthouses tour, we’re going to Cleburne, Johnson County in the Texas Lakes Trail Region!
The Johnson County Courthouse was completed and opened in 1913 in a Classical Revival style with Prairie-style elements by the Dallas architects Lang and Witchell with Charles E. Barglebaugh. The building was commissioned to replace the Second Empire-style 1883 courthouse, which burned down on April 15, 1912. The building’s unique architecture is characterized by strong, horizontal elements and flat, hipped roofs, in addition to Prairie-style elements and ornamentation. The exterior is constructed of pink granite ashlar and both rusticated and smooth Elgin brick. The courthouse tower rises six stories tall with an impressive interior atrium and is topped by a glass hemispherical dome. Citizens enjoy a common “game” of identifying the shapes of animals and other objects in the rich grey veining of the white Georgia creole marble walls while standing in the rotunda. The building was rededicated on December 1, 2007, and now also houses the Johnson County Courthouse Museum.
