In 1796, John Dickinson obtained a policy from the Insurance Company of North America (INA) in Philadelphia. He insured the house for a period of seven years for $3000.

The John Dickinson Mansion caught fire in 1804. John, living in Wilmington, was informed. "Tis with regret I acquaint you that your house...was burnt down..."

In July 1806 , John Dickinson informed the Insurance Company of North America that the house was rebuilt but cost more than $2400.
