Staff from DHHS Behavioral Health recently took part in a five-day Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training to learn strategies to better respond to people experiencing mental health crises.

Since 2007, CIT in Humboldt has brought together law enforcement, mental health professionals and staff from community organizations for advanced training in crisis response, de-escalation and trauma-informed practices.

DHHS’s very own Supervising Behavioral Health Clinician Megan Sheeran was awarded “Crisis Intervention Team Responder of the Year” and recognized for her dedication to serving the community and commitment to collaborating with partner and community agencies. Behavioral Health Clinician I Treasure Hunt and Peer Coach III Michael Pech also completed the training, which gives them the tools to use in the field to identify major mental health disorders and other challenges, such as substance use disorder, intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopment and neurocognitive disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s. These tools can help de-escalate a crisis and divert those experiencing behavioral health crises away from the criminal justice system and into treatment.

With Mental Health Matters Month coming to a close, take a moment to check in with yourself. Have you found some moments of balance and calm in your everyday routines?

Take Action for Mental Health’s third resource for May might be helpful 💚 It’s a short, printable zine-inspired booklet — use it as a guide to where you might find free and familiar care for your mental health.

🎶 Maybe it’s a habit you could do more often
☺ Or a friend who listens.

📒 This new guide is flexible and low-pressure, and it includes free resources you can call or text (like 988) anytime you need to talk to a trained counselor.
