Public Health has expanded hours for its childhood back-to-school vaccination clinics Aug. 4 through 7 and 11 through 14, at its main 529 I St. location in Eureka. Wednesday/Friday clinics are accepting appointments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday/Thursday clinics are accepting appointments from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All clinics will be closed from noon to 1 p.m.

Make sure your child is ready for school by staying up to date on their vaccinations. If you have private insurance, contact your child’s primary care provider to schedule vaccinations.

St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) hosted its annual Block Party and Community Resource Fair in Eureka, Wednesday, July 29. The event included a barbecue tri-tip lunch, a community mural painting led by local artist Maureen McGarry, a live DJ and more than 20 local organizations providing services and information to attendees. Staff from DHHS Social Services, Public Health and Behavioral Health were on-site and linking guests to programs and resources offered through the department. Thank you, St. Vincent de Paul - Eureka, CA - "Free Meal"!

Food for People is hosting its third annual benefit concert, Shredding for Hunger, Saturday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Historic Eagle House in Eureka. Support a good cause and enjoy an evening of music featuring Dos Galletas, Widdershins, Good Time Charlie’s and a special performance from Good Enuff doing the Ramones’ “It’s Alive.” The event is all ages and has a $10 suggested donation.

Staff from DHHS’s Housing, Outreach and Mobile Engagement team recently attended the K'ima:w Medical Center's 31st Annual Health Fair in Hoopa, providing information about Mobile Street Outreach, CalFresh, Medi-Cal, the Transportation Assistance Program, IHSS, CalWORKs, General Relief and access to Behavioral Health and other programs and services offered through the department.

DHHS’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program is hosting a Latch on Event at the Arcata Farmers’ Market, Saturday, Aug. 1, from noon to 1 p.m. The event is inclusive to all families and aims to raise awareness for World Breastfeeding Week, recognized Aug. 1 through 6, and National Breastfeeding Month.

Bring your blankets, babies and family to the Arcata Plaza and let’s enjoy the day together!

Environmental health officials are warning community residents to be on the lookout for harmful algal blooms after a dog died on Thursday, July 23, a short time after swimming in a slow, stagnant pool of water off the Eel River near Scotia.
