ROADSIDE RESCUE NEAR GASQUET: We were recently contacted by Michael who was traveling along U.S. 199 in Del Norte when he hit a big rock near Patrick Creek, damaging two tires and leaving him stranded without cell service on a roughly 107-degree afternoon.

After about 90 minutes, Kevin, a McCullough Construction employee working on our Route 197/199 project, stopped to help. Kevin had tire plugs, an air compressor and even ice-cold water. He made an emergency repair that got Michael back on the road. Kevin is pictured here.

Michael was so grateful that after returning home, he retraced the location using a photo from that day and contacted our construction team hoping to find the stranger who helped him.

“One simple decision to stop and help a stranger made an enormous difference,” Michael said.

We’re glad we found Kevin and grateful he stopped. This excellent work and customer service from our field construction contracting partners helped make a roadside emergency a minor inconvenience.

Caltrans invites the public to provide feedback for a feasibility study to look at ways to keep Route 1 open during flooding from the Garcia River, Gasker Slough, and Hathaway Creek. The goal is to identify solutions that reduce road closures and improve the highway’s long-term safety and reliability.

FIELDWORK AT LAST CHANCE GRADE: Crews will begin grading temporary access roads on Wednesday, Sept. 23, as part of geotechnical investigations for the Last Chance Grade Permanent Restoration Project. Drilling is expected to begin the week of Oct. 5, with fieldwork continuing through January.

This is investigation work, not tunnel construction. Crews will be drilling and testing below the ground, surveying and doing other fieldwork to gather information engineers need as design of the permanent solution continues.

Travelers on U.S. 101 may encounter traffic control or lane closures near active work areas. No trail or parking area closures are planned as part of this work, though the Damnation Creek Trailhead is closed through October due to a separate Caltrans project.

The map shows where work may be visible and heard along U.S. 101 and near the California Coastal Trail.

We would like to share an update on the Elk Creek Slide project along Route 1, just south of Elk in Mendocino County. This emergency project will involve drilling and constructing a shear pile wall, with work anticipated to begin in early October. Building the wall should take around eight weeks, followed by paving and guardrail installation.

EEL RIVER BRIDGE DEMO UPDATE: Crews have now taken down the second segment of the old Eel River Bridge along U.S. 101 near Rio Dell. We captured it in a timelapse video so you can see hours of work in just under a minute.

What remains of the bridge is expected to be removed by the end of September followed by removal of the temporary rock berm by mid-October. Work will continue outside the river channel through the winter, and crews are expected to begin installing piles for the new bridge next summer.
