AGL continues to be involved in design efforts around watersheds and rivers throughout North Dakota. We understand how valuable these natural resources are to our communities and the environment. We take our role as designers seriously in creating designs that are resilient, ecologically sensitive, and publicly accessible.

Jake Axtman and Haley Lind recently completed a two-day “WEDG Certification” course and exam hosted by the Waterfront Alliance. This organization trains design professionals to become leaders in sustainable and responsible waterfront design, promoting best practices that balance environmental stewardship with public access and long-term resilience.

This past summer, we launched our inaugural “The Big Idea” Summer Internship Program—a hands-on opportunity for one emerging professional to explore design concepts in a real-world setting in North Dakota. After a competitive interview process, we were thrilled to welcome Garrett Lieberg as the program’s first participant.

Over the course of several months, Garrett worked closely with area stakeholders, gathering basemap information and developing concepts for a new public plaza in downtown Bismarck. His work introduced fresh ideas and thoughtful strategies for how a new public space could best serve the community.

We were impressed with Garrett’s initiative, design thinking, and ability to engage stakeholders throughout the process. His contributions not only painted a vision for a new public space in Bismarck but also showcased the value of cultivating the next generation of designers.

We are grateful for Garrett’s hard work and dedication, and we look forward to seeing where his career takes him next!

We’re excited to introduce Shane as the newest member of the AGL team!

Originally from Hartford, South Dakota, Shane earned his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from North Dakota State University. During his time at NDSU, he not only excelled in design but also played bass drum in the marching band, where he served as a section leader and later as a drum tech.

Shane has a background in urban planning, park planning, playgrounds, and streetscape design with project experience throughout the Dakotas. His hands-on approach and creativity bring a valuable perspective to our team.

When he’s not at work, Shane spends much of his time outdoors, enjoying activities like hiking and fishing. He finds inspiration in exploring natural landscapes and appreciates the peace and creativity that comes with being immersed in nature. His dog, Pepper, is always by his side on these adventures.

We’re thrilled to have Shane on board and look forward to seeing the positive impact he’ll bring to our projects and communities!

AGL Landscape Architects would like to congratulate Mandan Public Schools and the surrounding community on the recent opening of the new Mandan High School. We are grateful to have been a part of the design team led by ICON Architectural Group.
The new High School will add tremendous value by providing a critical investment in the commitment to education and quality of life of the residents of Mandan.
We are excited to see the students, parents, faculty, and visitors who enter the school be inspired to learn and be part of an amazing facility that will serve this and many future generations of students. Go Braves!

Please join us in welcoming Elena to our AGL Bismarck team!

A North Dakota native, Elena is heading into her 4th year of NDSU’s Landscape Architecture program and is expecting to earn her master’s degree in the spring of 2026. She is excited to be interning in her hometown and working on projects that improve her city and state.

After studying abroad in Europe this upcoming fall semester, she plans to return to AGL and continue gaining professional experience and skills as she pursues her degree.

She has shared some of her favorite recent sketches from her time so far in the office. We are excited to see how she continues to grow with us.

Our Fargo office assisted in laying out the circuitous path to Barefoot Frida through Ortenstone Gardens. Barefoot Frida placed the stepstone boulders that provide the access path across the seasonal wetland that she lives along. Have you visited her yet? If you find yourself in Detroit Lakes over the 4th of July weekend, go take a peek! You can find her on the Troll Map here: https://trollmap.com/ #/barefootfrida

Our team is thrilled to be collaborating with a private landowner to bring to life a sculpture park and ornamental garden in the heart of Detroit Lakes. This endeavor is driven by our passion for creating spaces that reflect the unique character of our region and provide meaningful experiences for the community.

In this envisioned space, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of Detroit Lakes' landscape. The garden will serve as a canvas for local, state, national, and international artists, offering a rich tapestry of creativity for all to enjoy.

Our commitment to sustainability guides every aspect of this project. By using plants indigenous to our eco-regions, we aim to restore, preserve, and embrace the natural landscape.

Most importantly, this project is about community. We believe in the power of shared ownership. That's why we're inviting everyone to get involved, whether it's through volunteering for maintenance, participating in planting events, or sharing their ideas for the garden's future.

The Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (DMRA) has become a winter recreation centerpiece for eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota. Over the past decade, DMRA has constructed a new main lodge, redesigned ski slopes, added ski lifts, and added Nordic ski trails throughout the park. During this time, the footprint of the park has grown from 200 acres to over 350 acres, all while continuing to increase in popularity. AGL Landscape Architects is excited to be assisting DMRA in master planning efforts to help guide the expansion and continued success of this facility for decades to come.
