Major George Croghan, the commander of the American forces, defended the supply fort against the British attack with a lone cannon, Old Betsy. The Americans emerged from the battle as a hero and Croghan was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

Croghan Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August. Birchard Public Library of Sandusky County was founded in 1874 by Rutherford B. Hayes and his uncle, Sardis Birchard, and serves the communities of Fremont, Gibsonburg, Green Springs, and Woodville.

Join us for a talk on Webb Cook Hayes, who founded the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, on Monday, August 17 at 10:00 am. Meghan Wonderly-Kolbe will talk about her book, A Son's Dream: Colonel Webb Cook Hayes and the Founding of the Nation's First Presidential Library.

In this book, Meghan outlines the story of struggle and perseverance behind the founding of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums and shares the life of Colonel Webb Hayes. An entrepreneur and dedicated military professional, Webb led a life full of travel, adventure, and action. In addition to participating in five different wars, he was a champion for public history.
