Major George Croghan, the commander of the American forces, defended the supply fort against the British attack with a lone cannon, Old Betsy. The Americans emerged from the battle as a hero and Croghan was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Croghan Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August. Birchard Public Library of Sandusky County was founded in 1874 by Rutherford B. Hayes and his uncle, Sardis Birchard, and serves the communities of Fremont, Gibsonburg, Green Springs, and Woodville.
