is here!

This week, we are celebrating this amazing group of Howard T. Ennis students who graduated from our “Now We’re Cooking” Program!

We are incredibly proud of these students and all they have accomplished. This program is about so much more than cooking. It gives students of all abilities the chance to practice real skills, work as a team, build confidence, and see what they are capable of in a real-world setting.

There is something powerful about watching students step into a space, learn new skills, take pride in their work, and be celebrated as they learn and grow. That is what this program is all about.

Thank you to Howard T. Ennis School and the Indian River School District for your partnership and for helping create meaningful opportunities for students. We are grateful to work together to invest in their futures.

Congratulations to each of these students. We are cheering you on and wishing you continued success in all that comes next!

Monday Motivation!

Today, we are celebrating Mr. Floyd and the next step in his journey.

Mr. Floyd worked with First State Community Action Agency’s Workforce Development Program and will be starting a new job as a flagger! We are proud to celebrate this opportunity with him and all that it represents.

This is what motivation looks like. It looks like commitment, perseverance, progress, and taking the next step toward stability through meaningful employment.

At First State, workforce development is about more than finding a job. It is about helping people build confidence, access opportunities, and move forward with support.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. Floyd and wishing him much success in his new role.

As Community Action Month comes to a close, we are ending this month with full hearts and deep gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us, supported us, partnered with us, showed up for us, shared our posts, attended our events, welcomed us into community spaces, and helped lift up the work happening across Delaware.

To our staff: thank you for the care, commitment, and steady work you bring every day.

To our board: thank you for your leadership, guidance, and belief in this mission.

To our partners, funders, legislators, volunteers, and community supporters: thank you for standing with us and helping make this work possible.

And to the individuals, families, and communities we serve: thank you for trusting us, sharing your stories, and allowing us to walk alongside you.

Community Action Month may be ending, but the work continues. Every day, across Delaware, First State Community Action Agency is committed to helping people, strengthening families, and building stronger communities.

Thank you for celebrating our impact with us.

Success looks different for every child.

For Alison, it was gaining confidence in the water, learning new skills, and proudly earning a certificate during spring break swimming lessons through our After School Homework and Enrichment Program in partnership with the Sussex Family YMCA.

Programs like this are about more than activities. They create opportunities for children to build confidence, try something new, stay engaged, and continue learning outside of the classroom.

Moments like this matter. The smile. The accomplishment. The pride of realizing, “I did it.”

During Community Action Month, we are proud to celebrate the growth, achievements, and bright futures of the young people we serve every day.

Way to go, Alison!

Saturday community check-in:

What is one small thing that makes your community feel stronger?

Maybe it is a neighbor who checks in. A local organization that shows up. A school, church, pantry, library, park, volunteer, coach, teacher, or friend who makes people feel seen.

Strong communities are built in big ways and small ones. Today, we want to hear what that looks like where you live.

Drop your answer in the comments.

Summer looks different for every family.

For some, it means camp, beach days, cookouts, and time together. For others, it can also mean higher grocery bills, children home from school, transportation challenges, utility costs, housing stress, and the pressure of trying to make everything stretch.

At First State Community Action Agency, we know that strong communities are built when families have support, stability, and opportunity.

Across Delaware, we are here to help connect individuals and families with resources, programs, and people who care. Because community is not just where we live. It is how we show up for one another.

As we step into summer, we want to hear from you: What is one thing that makes your community feel like home?

This Throwback Thursday takes us back to 2011, when First State Community Action Agency’s La Casita Homework Program celebrated 10 years of helping children learn, grow, and succeed.

That year, La Casita reached a milestone that says so much about the power of consistent support: 100,000 student visits.

Every visit represented a child walking through the door and finding homework help, encouragement, enrichment, and adults who believed in their potential. For many families, La Casita was more than an after-school program. It was a trusted place where students could build skills, confidence, and connection.

During Community Action Month, we are proud to look back on moments like this because they remind us that lasting impact is built one child, one family, and one opportunity at a time.

The programs grow. The needs change. The mission continues.

Working Together Wednesday 🤝

Community Action works best when communities work together.

During Community Action Month, we have been honored to receive proclamations and recognition from partners across Delaware, including Sussex County Council, the City of Dover, and the Delaware General Assembly.

These moments are meaningful because they represent something bigger than a proclamation. They represent partnership.

The work of strengthening communities does not happen alone. It takes collaboration between nonprofits, local governments, county leaders, state officials, community organizations, and residents who all share a commitment to helping Delaware families thrive.

We are grateful for the leaders and partners who continue to support our mission, advocate for our communities, and work alongside us to address real needs across our state.

Together, we are building stronger families, stronger communities, and greater opportunity for Delaware.

That is the power of Community Action.

May is not only Community Action Month. It is also Older Americans Month, a time to recognize the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of older adults in our communities.

At First State Community Action Agency, we are proud to support seniors across Delaware through programs and services that help people remain connected, independent, engaged, and supported.

Through our Senior Companion Program, older adults provide companionship and support to fellow seniors, creating meaningful connections that reduce isolation and strengthen community. Through the Senior Community Service Employment Program, seniors gain paid training opportunities that help them build skills, confidence, and financial stability while continuing to contribute their talents and experience to the workforce.

But the impact does not stop there.

Seniors are served across many of our programs every day, including housing support, food access, energy assistance, community outreach, and more. Because supporting older adults means supporting dignity, stability, independence, and quality of life.

Community Action is about meeting people where they are and making sure no one is forgotten.

During Older Americans Month and Community Action Month, we celebrate the seniors who continue to shape our communities and the programs that help ensure they can thrive.
