This August has brought an unusually high amount of rainfall, including several heavy rain events. We are aware that some residents have experienced water in their basements, and we understand how concerning that can be. Water in the basement is usually caused by one of two sources: 1) stormwater seeping through walls, floors or windows, or 2) sanitary sewer backups from the basement drain.

The City of Grandview Heights takes a proactive approach to managing stormwater and maintaining our sewer infrastructure. Our ongoing efforts include:
✅ Annual cleaning of the entire sewer system to help ensure there are no blockages.
✅ Annual sewer lining projects to prevent groundwater and rainwater from entering the sanitary sewer system.
✅ Spot repairs when issues are identified through camera inspections conducted during the cleaning process.
✅ Monitoring during heavy rainfalls, including opening manhole covers when necessary to help ensure water is draining properly through the system.
✅ Regular street sweeping to reduce debris that could block street drains.
It is important to note that Grandview Heights' sanitary sewer system is connected to systems operated by the City of Columbus, Upper Arlington, and Marble Cliff. As a result, regional infrastructure conditions can also impact system performance during significant rain events.

The City of Columbus has several projects planned to improve sanitary sewer capacity, including the Third Avenue Relief Sewer and the Lower Olentangy Tunnel Project. These improvements are expected to help manage wastewater flows throughout the regional system. For more information about these projects, visit: https://www.columbus.gov/Business-Development/Capital-Improvement-Projects/Neighborhood-Sewer-CIPs

Street sweeping in Grandview Heights and Marble Cliff is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 31, weather permitting. Temporary No Parking signs will be posted in advance on streets scheduled for sweeping.

Residents are encouraged to move vehicles to an off-street location whenever possible. Observing posted parking restrictions is critical to allowing crews full access to gutters and roadways so they can effectively remove debris. Keeping streets clear of debris helps maintain proper stormwater drainage and reduces the risk of localized flooding during rain events.
