Road Closure Beginning tomorrow

We’re getting ready for the North Fork Music Festival! 🎶

To allow crews time to set up the stage and prepare for the festival, Main Street will close beginning Thursday at 7:00 PM from Taxi Alley to the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky/Mountain Association parking lot.

Please make sure all vehicles are moved before the closure begins. The road will remain closed throughout Friday and Saturday for the festival.

Taxi Alley and William D. Gorman Bridge will remain open and accessible during the closure.

Thank you for your patience as we prepare for an exciting weekend of live music in downtown Hazard! We can’t wait to see everyone at the North Fork Music Festival.

For 41 years, the Hazard Police Department was home to Charles Skiles. Everyone knew him by a simple nickname “Pap”. Pap was always the first one in the building in the morning, his Class A uniform on and his shoes shined. As our Administrator Lieutenant he had one simple rule. “No time, No pay”. He was known for always eating Lees Famous Recipe Chicken and wouldn’t dare eat any where else. He had a smile that could light up a room and everyone of us has a Pap story to tell. More importantly than 41 years of service, Pap served in the United States Navy for 21 years. He served in the Vietnam War, Korean War, and Cuban Missile Crisis. We lost Pap this week at 91 years old. He was family to us all and will be greatly missed. Please keep his family in your prayers. Rest easy Pap. We will take it from here.

Below is the traffic pattern to exit the plaza once the firework show is over. The only exit will be the one nearest to Hobby Lobby. All other exits will be blocked off. This is to ensure a steady traffic pattern to clear out the plaza the fastest. Please be patient as traffic will be busy. Please come and enjoy the fireworks beginning around 9:45pm.

Hazard Police Department's K9 Tia to get donation of body armor

Hazard Police Department, KY - K9 Tia will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Tia's vest was sponsored by Jean Devenport of Yakima, WA and will be embroidered with the sentiment "In honor of Sophie Lou". Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Terra Trophy and King of the Hammers are bringing the excitement to downtown Hazard on TOMORROW, June 10 from Noon to 4 PM for a special Downtown Social! Main street will be blocked off from Taxi Alley to Gorman Bridge starting at 7AM.

Come check out approximately 30 rally and off-road vehicles, meet teams and sponsors, and get a preview of the action coming to Hazard this October with the Maxxis Tires 48 Hours of Kentucky Rally and Ultra4 Nationals.

Congratulations to Logan Spencer on his graduation from the Department of Criminal Justice basic training class 568. Patrolman Spencer successfully completed over 800 hours of training including Patrol Procedures, Physical Training, Vehicle Operations, Defensive Tactics, Criminal Law, Traffic and DUI, Fi****ms, Criminal Investigations, and Tactical Responses to Crisis Situations.
