An annual tradition continued at the State Capitol last week, as members of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature presented more than 100 bags of donations to the YWCA Oʻahu “Dress for Success” program. The donations were collected through a clothing drive hosted by Representative Gregg Takayama and Senator Joy A. San Buenaventura, in which legislators, staff, and community members contributed new or gently used professional attire to support women entering or reentering the workforce.

The Hawaiʻi State Legislature mourns the passing of former Governor George R. Ariyoshi and issued the following statements:

“Governor Ariyoshi lived a life defined by service to the people of Hawaiʻi. His fiscal policies left our state on solid financial footing after 12-years as governor, and he worked tirelessly to shape a forward-looking vision for Hawaiʻi. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Jean and the Ariyoshi family, and offer our heartfelt gratitude for sharing him with all of us,” said Senate President Ronald D. Kouchi.

“Governor Ariyoshi dedicated his life to public service and to strengthening our state. As the first Asian American to serve as governor in the United States, he broke barriers and opened doors for many, including myself, to pursue public service. His visionary leadership and the creation of state functional plans in housing, water resources, transportation, and economic development set a solid foundation for our state. The House extends its heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Ariyoshi and the entire Ariyoshi ‘ohana,” said Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura.

Recess Day #7 ✅ House Committees are wrapping up the final hearings before conference committees begin.

Tomorrow, April 16, marks the Second Decking deadline, the last day for amended bills to pass third reading in their non-originating chamber and “cross back.” It’s also the final day for the originating chamber to disagree with any amendments. If there’s no agreement, bills may be referred to a conference committee, where members from both chambers work to resolve the differences.
