🌺 PLEASE SHARE: Families impacted by recent storms, natural disasters or other unexpected financial hardships are encouraged to apply for the Hawaiʻi Relief Program.

The statewide program provides short-term financial assistance for housing, utilities and automobile expenses to families with dependent children who are experiencing an episode of financial need.

Assistance may include:
🏠 Housing payments
💡 Utility payments
🚗 Automobile payments

The program is designed to help families secure and maintain stable housing and prevent homelessness during times of financial hardship.

If your family has been affected by a recent disaster or another qualifying circumstance, learn more and see if you qualify.

🌀 HURRICANE LOWELL UPDATE

Hurricane Lowell strengthened this morning into a powerful Category 4 hurricane, maintaining 150 mph winds with its center about 615 miles south of Līhuʻe.

Lowell is expected to turn north or north-northeast Sunday, potentially bringing major hurricane conditions to Kauaʻi County Monday.

⚠️ Heavy rain, flash flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, storm surge, and life-threatening surf are possible statewide, with impacts peaking early next week.

The federal government’s H.R. 1 established new work and community engagement requirements for many adults ages 19–64 to maintain Med-QUEST coverage. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may risk losing their coverage.

These requirements take effect January 1, 2027, and some exemptions apply.

Representative Darius K. Kila was joined by HPD, HFD, DOT, AAA Hawaiʻi, and the sister of a fallen tow operator to highlight Hawaiʻi’s newly expanded Slow Down, Move Over Law — Act 95.

The law now extends protections beyond emergency vehicles to all stationary vehicles along the roadside. Drivers are required to slow to a reasonable and prudent speed and move over when it is safe to do so.

When you see flashing lights or a stopped vehicle, slow down and move over. It could save someone’s life. 🌺

Two House bills signed into law help students succeed by alleviating financial barriers standing in the way. 📚✨

HB 2338 | Hawaiʻi Promise
Act 235 strengthens the Hawaiʻi Promise program by covering 95% of eligible students’ unmet direct educational expenses and improving coordination with federal financial aid. This helps ensure grants and scholarships can go toward essential costs like housing, food and transportation.

HB 2296 | School Meals
Act 236 helps make school meals more affordable by giving the Department of Education (DOE) greater flexibility by lowering the minimum portion of meal preparation costs that schools must recover from one-half to one-quarter, giving DOE greater flexibility to reduce prices while still offering free and reduced‑price meals.

Supporting Hawaiʻi’s educators means investing in our students and two House Bills that got signed into law demonstrate that commitment. 📚🌺

HB 1890 (Act 233) strengthens pathways for teacher salary increases and recognizes experience and dedication.

HB 1888 (Act 234) strengthens protections for educational workers by addressing harassment, improving safety protocols and providing additional support when threats arise.

Together, these measures help build a stronger, safer and more supportive education system for Hawaiʻi.

Current SNAP recipients who experienced food loss due to extended power outages, flooding, or other storm-related impacts may be eligible for replacement SNAP benefits. The replacement amount will be based on the value of the food lost.
