Have you experienced the new Texas Avenue yet? 🌿☀️

The first phase of the Cool + Connected Corridors initiative is already making a difference, creating a cooler, brighter, and more comfortable walk through Downtown Houston!

So far, the improvements include:
🌳 13 new trees and landscaping (joining nearly 100 trees planted along the Main Street Promenade, the backbone of the Cool + Connected Corridor network)
☂️ Petal-inspired shade structures at intersections, a site where trees can’t be planted; they provide both shade during the day and light up at night to increase pedestrian safety
🪴 Expanded native landscaping and new planters help absorb heat while bringing elements of the bayou into our pathways
💡 Enhanced lighting for better visibility after dark

The impact is already measurable:
🌡️ Shaded areas are averaging 10°F cooler, with some locations seeing surface temperatures up to 30°F lower
✨ Nighttime illumination is now 2 to 6 times greater, making the corridor more welcoming after sunset

Connecting the Theater District, Main Street Promenade, Daikin Park, hotels, residences, and office towers, these improvements are helping make Downtown easier and more enjoyable to explore on foot. This is just the beginning. More Cool + Connected Corridors are on the way, with Phase Two locations to be announced later this year.

How do you help thousands of visitors navigate a city during one of the world's biggest sporting events?

Through Via Fútbol, we partnered with
The Better Block, Momentum, and SWA Group to create a simple, intuitive wayfinding system for the FIFA World Cup. Inspired by successful global events, the project uses a blue hexagon pathway and easy-to-follow signage to help visitors answer one simple question: "Where do I go next?"

Designed with Houston locals and visitors from around the world in mind, the system prioritizes clarity over complexity. Whether you were arriving by METRO, exploring Downtown, or headed to the FIFA Fan Festival, good wayfinding design can make it easier to move through the city while encouraging people to discover everything Downtown Houston has to offer along the way.
