On Sunday, November 26, 2023, Laurence Jerome "Larry" Payne passed away in Houston, Texas. Larry spent nine years supporting CHILDREN AT RISK as a member of the Board of Directors, and he touched the lives of so many.

From Dr. Bob Sanborn, President & CEO, CHILDREN AT RISK.
"One of the first things I did when I became CEO was ask Larry to be on our Board. We could always count on him to be a voice for those in need... Larry's legacy is a testament to the power of committed leadership and the profound difference one individual can make in shaping a more equitable and compassionate society. At CHILDREN AT RISK, we are profoundly grateful for his invaluable contributions and enduring commitment to the welfare of children."

From Mandi Kimball, Vice President; Director of Public Policy & Government Affairs, C@R.
"Larry’s activism inspired many and positively impacted millions. He had a true, strong, unwavering voice for children and families and lived his life in service to others. I admire his ability and passion to speak the truth regardless of how hard it is for some to hear in effort to build strong communities and advocate for social justice. My favorite quote from Larry (which I heard often) was “There is no me…. there is only we and us”."

From Donald Bowers, Chair, Board of Directors, C@R.
"It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we mark the passing of Laurence J. “Larry” Payne, a luminary in public service and a stalwart champion for children's welfare. Larry's unparalleled commitment to improving the lives of underprivileged children and his tireless work in advocating for educational and social justice have left an indelible mark on our organization and the communities he served. Larry Payne's remarkable journey of service, from the halls of Congress to the heart of our communities, demonstrates an unwavering dedication to uplifting and empowering the most vulnerable among us."

Thank you for your incredible support! With your help, we raised over $200k at the 2023 Accolades: The Texas Academy Awards of Child Advocacy.

At this annual event, we celebrated outstanding child advocates and nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to improve the lives of Texas children. A delicious lunch was enjoyed by all, as we focused on the importance of Early & K-12 education.

CHILDREN AT RISK works to ensure every child and family has access to affordable high quality early education programs and strengthen an early childhood workforce that is prepared, rewarded, and supported. We conduct research to understand trends, inequities, resources, and opportunities in public education and use that research to advocate for policy change at the local, state, and federal levels.

We were honored to recognize Dr. Ruth Simmons, a Texan trailblazer in education. She made history as the first African American female President of an Ivy League institution, Brown University.

And now, without further ado, here are the winners of the 2023 Accolades:
