NDEAM is a time to recognize those contributions—and to remember that meaningful employment begins with opportunity and accessibility. How do we help people in the workplace? Here's a recent win: an individual with a visual disability changed roles with his employer and encountered new barriers as a result. He needed accommodations and additional support to navigate changes in his job duties, including learning to use a new timekeeping system.

A DRMS advocate worked with the individual, his VR counselor and his employer to identify solutions, put appropriate accommodations in place and arrange employment training to address the new barriers. The issues were successfully resolved, allowing the individual to continue in his new role with the support he needed.

Employment rights don't just matter when someone is looking for a job. They also matter when a person needs support to keep a job, adapt to changes or overcome a new barrier.

Recently, a DRMS advocate conducted a rights and PABSS training at a sheltered workshop. After the training, two individuals shared that they wanted to pursue employment in the community.

The advocate helped connect them with Vocational Rehabilitation and worked with the individuals and service providers to support their employment goals. Within a few weeks, both individuals had interviewed for jobs—and both were hired!

This is one example of how DRMS's PABSS program helps Social Security beneficiaries address employment barriers and pursue their employment goals. Employment opportunities matter. So does having the support to reach them.

So many smiles and lots of fun at Disability Friendly Day at the Mississippi State Fair with Joni and Friends! Every child deserves the chance to play, explore, and simply be a kid. We’re proud to have been part of an event that helps make those experiences more accessible for children with disabilities and their families!
