Su***de Basin is almost full. If you live in the glacial lake outburst flood evacuation zone, get your go-bag ready with everything you need. Expect to be away from home for the day or overnight, depending on when the Basin releases.

Don’t know where to go while the evacuation advisory is in effect? Floyd Dryden is available for temporary shelter, and parking is available by signing up in advance at bit.ly/CBJFloodVehicle.

And remember – STAY AWAY from the flood barriers, especially during the event. Barriers can be hit by trees and floating debris, endangering anyone nearby, as well as the first responders called to rescue.

Forty pumps are now deployed along the Mendenhall River, ready to help manage floodwater that seeps through the flood barrier system during this year’s glacial lake outburst flood. In our , we remind you to please stay away from the pumps to ensure they are ready to go when we need them. CBJ’s Streets & Fleet team and will be on hand to operate them with support from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters once the flood begins.

The US National Weather Service Juneau Alaska shared this afternoon that Su***de Basin is approximately 10 feet away from being full. Once the Basin is full, an alert will go out and we can expect to see the basin to start draining between 1 and 6 days later. If you live, work, or recreate in the area, prepare your plan for NOW.

If you live in the Mendenhall Valley and you have a heating oil tank, it’s time to secure the tank before this year’s glacial lake outburst flood happens.

During a flood, tanks can cause property damage and hazardous spills. Follow advice from our partners at the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and make sure to:

1. Secure fuel tanks by strapping them to a fixed structure or, for underground tanks, weighing them down with sandbags
2. Close all connections to the tank except for vent pipes, if there is fuel in your tank
3. Extend vent pipes above expected flood levels
4. Protect fragile fuel tank components, such as fuel filters, with a physical barrier

Make sure to also move hazardous materials (e.g. fuel, oil, paint, and cleaning supplies) into a secure, waterproof container at higher elevation to prevent hazardous spills during the flood.

• Know where you’ll go? Emergency shelter is available at Floyd Dryden (3800 Mendenhall Loop Road).
• Know where your pets will stay? We have limited space at Floyd Dryden (see bit.ly/2026petshelter), and Juneau Animal Rescue can also help coordinate shelter (call 907-789-6997)
• Know where your car will go? Temporary parking is available for residents in the evacuation zone – register vehicles in advance at bit.ly/CBJFloodVehicle.

If you live in the evacuation zone, remember to prepare your home by moving valuables and substances (e.g. oils, paints, detergents) into secure, waterproof containers at higher elevation. And, pack a go-bag!

8/6/2026 UPDATE: The sandbag-filling machine is down. Sandbags will be hand-filled until we can complete repairs.

As the glacial lake outburst flood approaches, we’re hosting more sandbag distribution events in front of the Dimond Park Field House on:

• Tuesday, August 4, from 4 to 6 p.m.
• Thursday, August 6, from 4 to 6 p.m.
• Saturday, August 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – if Su***de Basin has not yet released

All you need to do is show up with your vehicle. CBJ and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters personnel and volunteers will load up your car with prefilled bags. And if you can’t make it to one of the events, sandbag materials are available in the same location until the Basin releases – watch this great video on how to fill a sandbag by Juneau Flood Solution Advocates at https://vimeo.com/1185402335.

Please join us for National Night Out 2026!! This free, family friendly, community event will be held at Twin Lakes from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday August 4th. This is a great opportunity to meet and visit with your local police officers, firefighters, medics, and staff from many of our partner agencies. We will have food, beverages, emergency vehicles and other activities.
