Here’s your recap of last night’s Assembly meeting ⬇️

• The Fiscal Year 2027 Municipal Budget was adopted with cuts to the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, Parks & Recreation landscaping, the Arboretum, and Administration department. It also includes the sale of Mount Jumbo gym, one-time cuts to capital projects, and cuts to partner agency grants. A 9.92 mill property tax rate and updated 5-year Capital Improvement Program was adopted as a part of the budget.

• Three sales tax ordinances were approved: the sales tax cap on a single good or service was raised to $50,000 from $15,000, except for on car purchases of $50,000 or less; the $30 credit for timely online sales tax filing was eliminated; the geographic boundaries for CBJ sales tax collection aboard cruise ships were expanded to include sales in all CBJ waters.

• The Assembly approved restructuring the HESCO Barrier Project Phase 1 Local Improvement District (LID). CBJ will now cover 100% of the 2025 HESCO improvement costs — removing the previous 40% cost share to property owners within the LID.

• The Assembly approved forgivable loan funding for the design and construction of a pyrolysis unit for the Mendenhall Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project estimates reducing CBJ wastewater disposal costs by over $2 million annually.

Jim’s served on the Docks & Harbors board for eight years. With applications to join the board extended to June 8, applying is an opportunity you shouldn't miss.

Like many on the board, most of Jim’s life has been shaped by boats. He grew up fishing — commercially out of Bristol Bay and with his wife here in Southeast — and spent many years volunteering with local fishing organizations. Joining the Docks & Harbors board was a natural fit that he hopes other fishermen will consider too.

"We need people who are knowledgeable about fishing, boating, harbors, and everything,” he says. “If you’re involved somehow, in commercial or sport, you can have an impact.”

Jim’s impact includes securing funding to build a drive down float in Aurora Harbor next year. He’s witnessed the expansion of Statter Harbor’s launch facilities, and he’s served as a former vice chair of the board and a liaison to the Assembly’s Lands, Housing & Economic Development Committee.

When asked why he’s involved in the Docks & Harbors board, his answer is simple: “This is where I live.”
