The Lafayette Parish region of south Louisiana was settled by French-speaking Acadians in the mid 1700s. The British had driven them from Nova Scotia for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the English Crown. The Acadians were joined by another group of settlers called Creoles, descendants of African, West Indian and European pioneers. At the time of the migration, Louisiana was under Spanis

h rule, and authorities welcomed the new settlers. Lafayette began as Petit Manchac is the mid-1700s when the English and Indian traders flocked to the point where the Old Spanish Trail crossed the Vermilion River. In 1821, An Acadian refugee, Jean Mouton, formally designed Lafayette with St. The town grew around the church, and in 1824 individual parishes were formed. state divided into parishes instead of counties. The original division matched jurisdictions of the Roman Catholic Church. The community incorporated in 1836 as Vermillionville. Agriculture and cattle raising boosted the economy, and the community prospered until the region was nearly destroyed by yellow fever and the Civil War. In 1881, when the railroad was extended from New Orleans to Houston, the area again prospered. The town's name was changed to Lafayette in 1884. In 1940, oil companies began to establish offices in Lafayette because of its central location to oil activities. Today, Lafayette is a center of gulf oil and gas industry. Help us join in congratulating and welcoming our Summer Extension Interns!

We are excited to welcome Alexis Funderburk and Carter Aucoin, who have been selected as interns with the Lafayette Extension Office through the LSU AgCenter. We are thrilled to have them as part of our team this summer and look forward to the energy, ideas, and dedication they will bring to our programs and community outreach efforts.

Alexis Funderburk is proud to call Lafayette home, and her journey with the LSU AgCenter has truly meant so much to her. From serving communities across Louisiana to completing her work right here in Lafayette Parish, each experience has deepened her passion for helping others live healthier lives.
As she finishes her M.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics and work toward becoming a Registered Dietitian, Alexis is excited to keep giving backβ€”through education, outreach, and real, practical solutions that make a difference.

A graduate of Acadiana High School and current student and livestock judging team member at Blinn College, Carter Aucoin from Scott, Louisiana is eager to dive deep into the summer internship program at LSU AgCenter. Committed to the agricultural industry, he plans to further nourish his passion for educating the youth in the ag world while working alongside parish agents to help development and organize events, as well as numerous opportunities for the Lafayette Parish youth.

Please join us in wishing Alexis and Carter a great summer with our office! πŸŒ±πŸ’œ
