4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life Jean Church in the center. Louisiana is the only U.S.

The Lafayette Parish region of south Louisiana was settled by French-speaking Acadians in the mid 1700s. The British had driven them from Nova Scotia for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the English Crown. The Acadians were joined by another group of settlers called Creoles, descendants of African, West Indian and European pioneers. At the time of the migration, Louisiana was under Spanish rule, and authorities welcomed the new settlers. Lafayette began as Petit Manchac is the mid-1700s when the English and Indian traders flocked to the point where the Old Spanish Trail crossed the Vermilion River. Agriculture and cattle raising boosted the economy, and the community prospered until the region was nearly destroyed by yellow fever and the Civil War. In 1881, when the railroad was extended from New Orleans to Houston, the area again prospered. The town's name was changed to Lafayette in 1884. In 1940, oil companies began to establish offices in Lafayette because of its central location to oil activities. Today, Lafayette is a center of gulf oil and gas industry. 📢 IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK VALIDATION UPDATE

Beginning with the 2026–2027 livestock show season, a 4-H agent or FFA advisor MUST be present when DNA samples are collected during the validation process.

To help Lafayette exhibitors meet this requirement, parish-wide validation events will be held at Blackham Coliseum on the following dates:

The countdown is on, and we’re gearing up for another exciting year of showcasing Louisiana’s finest livestock! Here’s what you need to know to make sure your animals are ready to shine at the 2027 LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows.

🔍 Exhibitor Responsibilities:
• Animals must be in continuous possession of the exhibitor from validation through the State Livestock Show.
• Enter your animals into 4-H Online before the possession deadline.
• Validate your animals***.

🚨 Leadership Opportunity for Lafayette 4-H Shooting Sports Sh***un Members! 🚨

Lafayette 4-H is excited to launch the Shooting Sports Ambassador Pilot Program for the 2026-2027 year! This new leadership opportunity is designed for outstanding Shooting Sports members who want to serve as mentors, promote the program, and help develop the next generation of Lafayette 4-H Shooting Sports participants.

✅ Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a current Lafayette 4-H Shooting Sports member in grades 9-12
• Must have at least three years of experience in the Shooting Sports Program
• Submit two letters of recommendation with the application
• Complete required ambassador trainings if selected
• Participate in an interview

As a Shooting Sports Ambassador, you may:

��Mentor younger Shooting Sports members
��Assist with discipline practices and educational activities
��Support Hunter Education courses
��Lead and assist at parish, regional, and state competitions
��Promote the Shooting Sports program and recruit new members
��Represent Lafayette 4-H at special events and community programs throughout the year
