Last night, May 28, 2026, at approximately 9:43 p.m., Lewiston Police attempted to stop a vehicle in the downtown area. The vehicle failed to stop, and a brief pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended behind 240 Bartlett St. when the vehicle’s tire deflated after striking an exposed pipe behind the building.

Police apprehended a 14-year-old male after he fled from the vehicle.

It was initially reported that shots were fired during the pursuit; however, at this time, we have no indication that any shots were fired and believe the loud noise heard was the vehicle’s tire popping. Bullet holes were found in the vehicle, but investigators believe they are related to a previous shooting incident involving the same vehicle.

The 14-year-old male taken into custody and charged with Refusing to Submit to Arrest, he was transported to the police station and later released into the custody of his guardians.

This investigation remains ongoing and more charges are expected.

The Lewiston Police Department will be increasing patrols as we participate in NHTSA’s Click It or Ticket High Visibility Enforcement Campaign. This is done in partnership with the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.
Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of injury in the event of a crash. So far in 2026 there have been 23 motor vehicle occupant fatalities. Of those, 13 (57%) were unbelted.

It's not just a law; it’s a lifesaver.
