Drone Aerial Inspection of Overhead Power Lines: South Roundup

Fergus Electric has contracted Skyline Aviation, LLC to conduct an aerial drone patrol over our entire South Roundup substation. The patrols are planned to start today, April 29th. During these patrols, we will be recording the powerlines to identify any potential maintenance issues that require attention. The patrol is expected to last over the next three to four weeks.

Aerial inspections will take place on weekdays and weekends. If you have a locked gate or have any questions, please contact our Lewistown office at (406) 538-3465

Re: Aerial inspection of overhead electrical facilities

In 2021, Fergus Electric Cooperative, Inc. launched its aerial inspection program to visually inspect our overhead facilities. The drone operator flies the aircraft from pole-to-pole recording video footage. From the camera’s vantage point, we can identify various maintenance concerns that need addressed, such as chipped or broken insulators, loose or missing hardware, and vegetation issues. Using the information gleaned from the videos, we create service orders and then schedule a crew to take care of the maintenance. Our proactive line inspection program and subsequent maintenance help to ensure reliable service for years to come.

Fergus Electric is impressed with the program’s success and have hired Skyline Aviation, LLC to use drone technology to help inspect the overhead facilities across our service territory. The drone operator will record video of the powerline owned and maintained by Fergus Electric and will stop at the meter base. The video footage will be used for internal purposes only. Line maintenance is targeted to decrease the risk of fire, improve system reliability and increase the longevity of our vast electric system.

If you have any questions, issues or concerns, please call Bret Ophus at (406) 538-3465.
