Annually, our Madison Common Council joins the United States in recognizing September 15, 2026, through October 15, 2026, as Hispanic Heritage Month. This month honors the economic, cultural, and social contributions that Hispanic/Latinx people have made to our nation. The rich and distinctive culture of the Hispanic/Latinx community has always been an integral part of our country's identity.

During this recognition, the Common Council heard from two community members who shared their experiences as Hispanic workers in the United States. Their stories reaffirm that the government has a responsibility to ensure that funds are managed properly, as poor management affects workers, not just the companies receiving the money.

"It is thanks to the Hispanic workforce that this country and city thrive. Furthermore, a Hispanic individual deserves to be treated with respect and dignity."

At the Tuesday Common Council meeting, the Madison Common Council recognized October 1 - 8, 2026 as Week Without Driving. Week Without Driving is a national challenge to increase awareness and understanding of non-drivers and the barriers they face in our communities, which the City of Madison has joined other Dane County communities, organizations, local champions, and policymaking bodies in recognizing annually since 2024.

Huge congratulations to Dr. Corinda Rainey-Moore who received the 2026 Reverend James C. Wright Human Rights Award
by the City of Madison Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and the
Department of Civil Rights - Equal Opportunities Division (EOD).

The Reverend James C. Wright Human Rights Award honors the late Reverend James C. Wright, who served as Executive Director of the Equal Opportunities Commission from its inception in 1968 until his retirement in 1992. The award is given to an individual who best exemplifies Reverend Wright’s dedication and compassion for civil and human rights and conducts their daily life consistent with these values.
