County Council approved construction contracts this week for two Transportation Sales Tax projects that will improve safety, connectivity, and mobility for people traveling throughout Charleston County.

📍 Savannah Highway Intersection & Wappoo Road Improvements will improve safety and mobility at the intersections of Savannah Highway with Dupont Road/Stinson Drive and Wappoo Road. Improvements include new sidewalks, turn lanes, traffic signals and crosswalks, along with drainage improvements, roadway resurfacing, and updated pavement markings.

📍 Folly Road Bike & Pedestrian Improvements will add approximately 7,000 feet of new sidewalks along both sides of Folly Road, creating a more continuous pedestrian network from the Ellis Creek Bridge to Wilton Street. The project will also add bike lanes, resurface and restripe the roadway, and make drainage and utility improvements.

Together, these projects are helping build a transportation network that works better for everyone, with safer, more connected ways to get around Charleston County.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health has notified Charleston County Mosquito Control (CCMC) of confirmed positive West Nile virus (WNV) cases in Charleston County.

In response, CCMC is taking additional measures to reduce adult mosquito populations and limit the potential spread of WNV.

Residents can help reduce their risk of mosquito-borne illness by taking the following precautions:
- Drain standing water around your home that can serve as a breeding site for mosquitoes.
- Avoid outdoor activity, when possible, during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
- Dress to deter mosquitoes by wearing long sleeves and long pants when outdoors.
- Defend yourself by using an effective, EPA-registered insect repellent.
- Maintain doors and window screens in good condition to keep mosquitoes outdoors.

The next quarterly project update for the ongoing U.S. 17 and Main Road project will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 25, at St. Johns High School, located at 1518 Main Road.

During the meeting, the project team will provide updates on milestones achieved, work underway, and next steps. Following their presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to speak directly with the project team.

Funded by the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax, the U.S. 17 and Main Road improvements will reduce congestion at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Main Road, increase capacity along Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River and Chisolm Roads, provide safe bicycle and pedestrian access across the Stono River, and improve stormwater drainage throughout the project area.
