This year was my first legislative session as Executive Director and I entered it at a pivotal time for real estate. Changes happening nationally created new expectations around when buyers should sign agreements with their brokers. Our position was simple: A settlement reached in another state shouldn’t dictate how Oklahoma brokers run their businesses. So, we went to work.
After months of conversations at the Capitol, and with tremendous leadership from Senator Julie Daniels and Representative Mike Osburn, SB 1217 passed the Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Kevin Stitt. It takes effect Nov. 1.
SB 1217 preserves the ability of managing brokers and brokerage owners to determine what works best for their businesses and their clients, while maintaining important consumer protections. You may believe a buyer-broker agreement should be signed before the first showing. You may believe it should be signed at the time of an offer. But I hope there is one thing we can all agree on: Oklahoma brokers should have the flexibility to make professional decisions based on their businesses and the clients they serve.
We are grateful to Senator Daniels and Representative Osburn for carrying this legislation, to Governor Kevin Stitt for signing it, and to every licensee who spoke up, used your voice, or called your legislators - whether you agreed with us or not. Your voice matters.

SB 1217 is one example of a much larger body of work happening at the Commission. There are conversations with policymakers, modernization efforts, new resources for licensees and consumers, and countless decisions being made every day to keep Oklahoma real estate moving forward.
I am honored to serve as Executive Director alongside Commissioners and staff who care deeply about this profession and the people we serve. I’m proud of what we accomplished together this legislative session, and of the work we will continue to do for Oklahoma.
