Paramus Recycling Center Hours Update

Due to ongoing illegal dumping at the Paramus Recycling Center, we will be replacing the gate and changing the center’s hours of operation.

The new hours will be:

Monday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Tuesday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Wednesday: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Thursday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Sunday: Closed

These changes are necessary because of continuing illegal activities that have been observed at the center. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep the Recycling Center clean and available for our residents. Clothing bins, book bins, composting bin and a styrofoam collection bin will still be accessible 24 hours.

💡Trivia Tuesday💡

How can we solve the flooding issues??

Well...the answer no one wants to hear is you will never truly solve this issue! The DPW works together with various departments and agencies using state guidelines and the master plan to implement the most in depth storm water regulations that we are able to assist with flooding issues. BUUUUUUUUT don't get too discouraged because there are some things you can do on your end to help. If you live in a lower lying area near water, it is best to do as much research as you can. Some ideas to think over:
- Installing drainage systems into your yard
- Planting native, water tolerant plants
-Rain gardens which direct rain away from your house
-make sure your gutters are clean
-make sure impervious materials are pitched away from your house
-Make sure not to block storm drains in your area
-if you have a brook in your yard, make sure to maintain the area (research DEP guidelines)

This weekend those Jack-o-lanterns turn 🎃back into pumpkins! You can do the following with them...

-put it with your brush pick up day
-put it in the trash
-if you did not put paint/bleach or other chemicals you can sign up for the food scrap recycling program and bring it to the recycle center for food scrap recycling
-again, if you have no paint/bleach or chemicals you can see if the Zoo would like it for enrichment. For the animals of course!
-oooooor leave it for the animals to eat (we aren't saying this is OK or you SHOULD because you probably shouldn't feed the wildlife...but DPW has no jurisdiction on that either way 😁)

Please do NOT put them into the leaf piles on the street. This may seem harmless, but it can do damage to our trucks if they get covered up and the vac tries to suck them up. Also, it can lead to animals climbing into the leaf piles and we don't want any of that.

How will you celebrate National Food Day?

We can tell you a few ways you can celebrate!!!

Donate any food you may not be using such as non-perishable canned/boxed food or even cold items as long as they stay at temperature. You can bring these items to the Paramus Food pantry located on Farview Ave.

Take a minute to plan your menu and then shop accordingly.

You can also sign up for the town food scrap recycling program. It is free! You can bag your items in compostable bags or toss them in a bucket and bring them to the recycling center. - you MUST register to receive the code in order to open the bin.

How can you safely dispose of your prescription medication?

-do not toss these into the trash OR the toilet!
-Paramus Police department participates in the prescription drug drop box program, and a bin is located in their building for unused prescription medication
-BCUA - project medicine box: bring in original containers or sealed bags. No sharps or liquids (see BCUA recycling events flyer in the new year for 2027 dates)

If you have sharps:
-purchase an approved sharps container
-use any of the following: metal coffee can/THICK plastic such as laundry detergent containers and place the sharps item inside

Once you have either of these items place your sharps into the container, seal it shut with duct tape, label SHARPS NOT FOR RECYCLING and put it into your trash container. This protects not only our crews but also those at the plants.

Does your significant other yell at you not to shave in the sink? Well, they may have a legit gripe! That being said...don't try to hide it by flushing the remnants down the toilet because then we will have an even bigger problem! Maybe just clean up after yourself and toss the leftovers in the trash! Hair in the sewer system can cause a clog and then a backup.
