Caring for yourself is part of caring for them.

Many caregivers spend so much time looking after someone they love that they forget to care for themselves.

Taking time to learn, ask questions, and receive encouragement isn't selfish.

It's one more way to care well for your loved one.

A beautiful legacy will live on through generations to come! 💚

Perry Lutheran Homes recently surprised Dave Menz by dedicating the Acorns & Oaks Discovery Room in memory of his late wife, Karen.

Karen was a longtime PLH board member and elementary school educator, dedicated volunteer, and one of the early champions of the vision that became Acorns & Oaks. She believed deeply in Jesus, children, education, and the value of bringing generations together.

Dave was joined by residents, Acorns & Oaks children, PLH staff, friends, Christ Lutheran Church members, and others who have supported and helped carry this shared vision forward. Together, we gave thanks for Karen’s life and dedicated a special space where children can learn, play, and explore alongside our residents.

Karen’s vision and loving, faith-filled spirit will continue to shape lives for generations to come!

Isaiah 52:7

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

Dear Heavenly Father:

You have done all things well and given us much to talk about. Still, Your good is often missing from our daily speech and we share things of lesser value. Help us to overcome the daily swill with the swell of Your good news. Strengthen us to speak of Your Son, Jesus, our Lord, who saves! In Jesus, Amen!

John 1:50-51

Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Dear Heavenly Father:

You see everything and all past, present and future are in Your focus. We see with myopic eyes only the present. By faith, You improve our sight, joining us into Your eyesight able to see beginning from Creation to the Last Day, and all because we can see the cross of Christ the Crucified Lord and Savior of all humanity, in clear focus for all who believe. Strengthen our faith to see You, so that we can sharpen our vision to see what the world cannot. We see Jesus! Amen.

From salt painting to thumbprint ferris wheels and pom-pom ice cream cones, our St. James neighborhood residents use plenty of imagination and creativity when it comes to art! 🎨 Along the way came conversations about their artwork, memories of past fairs, and the joy of creating together.

Art is much more than a fun activity. For those living with dementia, creative projects can strengthen fine motor skills, encourage focus and coordination, spark memories, and offer meaningful ways to communicate.

Lunch just tastes better with a bus full of friends!

Our residents headed to the Whistlin’ Donkey for good food, plenty of laughter and time together beyond our walls. Because living fully means continuing to go places, enjoy favorite experiences and share life with people who truly care. 🩵

Thank you to PLH staffers Geneen, Essie, Brandon, Bob, and Elizabeth, as well as Joyce (resident Loren’s sister), for making the fun possible!

Winner winner, lemon dinner! 🍋

After a month of guesses, Grandma Jean came closest with 300 Lemonheads. The actual number? 303! Well… 302 now, because the winner had to sample her prize.

Thankful for all the resident guesses and plenty of fun along the way. Congrats again Grandma Jean!

A couple more gems from PLH Cruise Week!

Pastry Chef Aimee kept everyone well fed, German in transportation kept our passengers moving, and Grandma Caroline appointed herself First Mate! A former CNA, Activity Director and longtime volunteer, Caroline still loves finding ways to help, with a healthy dose of ornery mixed in. Once a helper, always a helper. ⚓️
