September 13th to 19th is National Arts Education Week! This year the Americans for the Arts’ theme is “Every Student, Every Community” so we are showcasing six of our 2026 Arts and Culture Project grantees supporting K-12 arts education programing in Reno.

Reno Little Theater – FY26 Education Program: Year-round Education programs for K-12 students including Broadway Our Way (Picture 1)

The Reno Jazz Orchestra – From Classroom to Stage: Elevating Young Jazz Artists: providing comprehensive jazz education and performance experiences for youth in Northern Nevada (Picture 2)

Reno Philharmonic – RPA Kids (RPAK): Music Education Program: free afterschool strings and general music program for underserved students in grades 2–5 at local Title 1 elementary schools (Picture 3)

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival – D.G. Menchetti Educational Outreach Programs - InterACT 2026: a fun, highly interactive, humanities-based workshop series that gets students out of their seats and engaged with the themes, stories, and language of Shakespeare’s works (not pictured)

Peter Whittenberger’s video artwork, “And The Wise Soil Smiles” is now on view at the Canyon Flats Video Wall.

A single stone located on a walking path serves as a lens through which a diverse cast of characters and changes to the landscape are viewed. The stone and trail remember the narratives while existing as a constant of the landscape, in a world of unprecedented change.

Watch the video at the Canyon Flats building, 661 N Center St, Reno, NV 89503. The video wall is located on the exterior side of the building on Virginia St. and is on a loop and available for viewing 24/7.

Bring Your Own Camera is now on view until October 16th at McKinley Arts and Culture Center. The exhibition highlights talented photographers from the Reno-Sparks community and the images they have captured while taking part in The Holland Project’s monthly photo walks where each month a new local photographer curates a route and takes the group on a walk. The Hunt for the Blue Grump is now on view until October 16th at McKinley Arts and Culture Center. The blue grump grumps are a city-dwelling people of great esteem and prowess. Behold their abilities to negotiate deals, increase fame, and acquire great fortunes. Each dancing grump grump creature was made by seven artists from The Potentialist Workshop collective. The Hunt for the Blue Grump exhibit is from the wild world of the Upside Down Universe, Reno's largest collaboratively created interactive art immersive brought to life by over 65 artists. “An eye not told what to see, sees more.”
The First Street Show is now on view at the Metro Gallery. Curated by 2026 Reno City Artist Joanna Drakos. The exhibition displays four local, non-representational, abstract artists, Jutta Gietl, April Gratrix, Jessamyn Parker, and Susan Handau. An artist reception is being held on Thursday, October 22 from 5-7 p.m. at the Metro Gallery in Reno City Hall. The exhibition can be seen in-person in the Reno City Hall lobby, M-F 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until November 6th.

Call for Artists! The City of Reno is seeking qualified artists for a new large‑scale public art piece in the upcoming roundabout at West 4th Street and Summit Ridge Drive. The selection committee is looking for artists experienced in large outdoor sculpture projects and who have a strong connection to Reno, the region, or the American West. This is a national call open to U.S.-based artists and teams with experience in projects of similar scale. The budget of $200,000 covers all project costs from design through installation.

Drakos is a non-representational abstract painter who was appointed by the City of Reno Arts & Culture Commission as this year’s Reno City Artist. The one-year appointment highlights visual artists in the community and includes a solo exhibition at the City Hall Metro Gallery.

Join the Team! City of Reno Arts & Culture is hiring a Public Art Technician. Our Public Art Technicians help us organize and install our galleries. They also take the lead on maintaining the public art collection, including hanging and moving artwork, removing graffiti, applying graffiti coatings, and preparing signal boxes.
This is a temporary, non-benefited, part-time position. Applications close on September 7th. Those interested in applying should do so through the City of Reno employment website.

City of Reno Arts & Culture Grants are now open for applications! These grants ask organizations to demonstrate social impact beyond a traditional audience experience and a plan to reach diverse and underserved populations. Last year we gave out over 35 grants supporting a range of projects from theater to dance, cultural events and more.
This grants cycle will fund Events or Projects happening between January 1 to December 31, 2027. Applicants can request up to $7,000.
Application Deadline: September 30, 2026, at 11 p.m.
Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations or public institutions under chapter 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code or qualified educational institutions. Grants will not be awarded to individuals. Locations for eligibility require that the project take place in the City of Reno boundaries.
A virtual applicant workshop and Q&A will take place September 8 at 2 p.m on Zoom.

The City of Reno is seeking a visual artist to serve as the City Artist for 2027! This is a one-year appointment beginning January 2027 with a stipend of $3,500. The City Artist will curate two exhibitions, two public talks, a City Council presentation, and give consultation for next year's City Artist. There is also a potential purchase of a piece of the artist's work, up to $3,000, to become part of the City of Reno Metro Art Collection.
The mission of the program is to promote visual artists living in Reno, to highlight visual art in the community, and to engage with the public through visual art.
To apply, candidates must be a Reno resident and able to complete the program requirements. Applications are due September 30, 2026, by 11 p.m. PT. For more information and the application, visit https://cityofrenoartscultureandevents.submittable.com/submit
