New York State has expanded eligibility for the Energy Affordability Program, which provides eligible households with monthly discounts on utility bills. Half of all New York households are now eligible, including millions of New Yorkers who may not have qualified in the past.

Affordable housing has its own language. HCV. RAD. HOTMA. NSPIRE. PBV. LIHTC. ACOP. 🏘️

It's a lot of letters, we know! So we're breaking them down one at a time, starting with HCV: the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

If you've ever heard someone mention "vouchers" when discussing housing, this is likely what they mean.

HCV helps eligible households afford privately owned rental housing by providing rental assistance through a local housing authority, so residents aren't limited to traditional public housing and have more say where they live. It works because residents, landlords, housing authorities, and HUD all do their part.

Knowing what these terms mean can make it easier to understand your options, ask the right questions, and feel more confident navigating the process.

Foodlink’s Curbside Market is bringing a little something extra to Lake Tower today!

Join this morning, Tuesday, September 1 from 10:30-11:15 a.m. during the regularly scheduled Curbside Market visit for food samples, nutrition resources and helpful information from Foodlink and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

A Foodlink nutrition navigator will be on site sharing samples, and an Excellus dietitian will be available to answer questions and provide nutrition information.

As fall approaches, we can all take a few simple steps to help keep our homes safe and comfortable. 🍂

✅ Check windows and doors for drafts, leaks, or damage, and report any concerns to your property management team.

✅ Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are properly tested.

✅ Keep radiators, vents, and baseboard heaters clear of furniture, curtains, and other belongings.

✅ Make sure your contact information is current so you receive important property and weather updates.

Reporting maintenance concerns early can help prevent bigger issues once colder weather arrives. Let your maintenance team know right away if you have any concerns!

RHA is currently operating under a HUD funding shortfall. This means the Housing Choice Voucher funding available to RHA is not enough to fully cover the program’s projected costs for the year.

Because of this, HUD requires RHA to take additional steps to manage available funding and protect assistance for families currently receiving vouchers.

These changes may affect voucher portability, certain rent increase requests and project-based voucher rent adjustments.

Our team continues to follow HUD guidance and support the residents and partners we serve.

How do the Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Programs differ in how they provide rental assistance?

🏠 Public Housing includes homes owned and managed by a local housing authority, such as Rochester Housing Authority.

🔑 Housing Choice Vouchers help eligible households rent from participating private landlords, with a portion of the rent covered through the program.

Both programs help expand access to safe, affordable housing, but the housing arrangement is different.
