Friday, May 1st was a great golf day, and a huge success for the Fulton L. Walker, Jr. Golf Tournament! Celebrating its 9th year, nearly 100 golfers took to the links to raise funds for academic scholarships for local students. To date, over $32,000 has been awarded to 28 deserving scholars. Earth Day | April 22 🌱

Growing Environmental Awareness — One Seedling at a Time!

Through a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Capon Bridge Elementary School, students had the opportunity to learn about environmental stewardship while working on school-based projects. To help highlight that Earth Day is something we can celebrate every day, students and staff each received a White Pine seedling to plant.

Hands-on learning like this helps cultivate a lifelong appreciation for our environment—one tree, one student, and one small action at a time.

Volunteer Appreciation Week | April 19–25 💙

In 2025, more than $1.7 million in grants and scholarships were awarded to strengthen our community and support students pursuing their dreams. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our grant and scholarship committee volunteers.

Collectively, more than 100 individuals generously give their time and expertise to carefully read, review, and score applications—often facing the difficult task of choosing among many deserving organizations and students.

Their commitment helps ensure that resources reach those who need them most and that the philanthropic vision of our donors is honored.

Our team and our community thank all EWVCF volunteers for the difference you make. 🌟

INVESTING IN EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY GROWTH

Nearly $29,000 was awarded across 10 grants through the Hardy County Founding Fund. The funding supports a range of initiatives, including projects at the Hardy County Public Library and the Wardensville Community Library, as well as educational programs at East Hardy Elementary School and Moorefield’s high, middle, and intermediate schools.

Moorefield High School, which recently introduced Fling Golf into its physical education curriculum, is especially excited about the opportunities its grant will provide. The funding will allow more students to improve their physical, social, and emotional well-being while being introduced to this new sport.

Public Health Week | April 6–12 🌿

Strong communities start with strong public health. During our recent Winter Grant Cycle, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation proudly supported 11 healthcare-focused projects totaling nearly $65,000.

We are also excited to welcome two new grantees to our community of partners: the American Red Cross Greater Shenandoah Valley Chapter and We Do Recovery, Inc.. Their work helps strengthen health, safety, and recovery services for residents across our region.

Thank you to our generous donors whose vision and commitment make these investments in community well-being possible. Together, we are helping build a healthier future for all. ❤️

🍎 What happens when a group of educators get together to talk about professional development and student achievement? They leave energized and recharged!

Thank you to the amazing teams from Capon Bridge Middle School and Mountain Ridge Middle School for attending the Ignite the Classroom event.

👏 Congratulations on being selected for the West Virginia cohort of teachers who will attend the Ron Clark Academy this summer. We can’t wait to celebrate your success with you!

Meet Chris Janelle, EWVCF Board President

Chris Janelle is an Eastern Panhandle attorney and partner in the law firm of Sutton & Janelle, PLLC. He graduated from the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law. He has been active in the community serving on boards for the Boys & Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle, Berkeley County Development Authority, Main Street Martinsburg, and the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce. Chris and his wife Sherri live in Shepherdstown, WV. They have two married daughters and three grandchildren.

Here is what Chris has to say:

Q: When did you become active with the EWVCF and how have you served?

A: I have been involved with the EWVCF for about ten years. During that time, I have served in some capacity on every committee and have chaired the Gift Acceptance and Governance Committees. I currently serve as president and am a past treasurer and board vice president.

Q: What compelled you to be part of the EWVCF?
A: This is the most impactful organization I have ever had the privilege to serve. We are unique in this community, in our ability to generate and act as stewards for our donors' resources, and to target and deliver them quickly and efficiently to those who need them most.

Q: What goals do you have for the Foundation under your leadership?
A: I am proud and honored to serve an organization with such skilled and dedicated staff, donors who are unfailingly generous, and a diverse, caring, and expert group of volunteer board members. I hope to broaden our outreach to potential donors, and to continue to seek out ways in which we can strengthen our mission to Gather, Grow and Grant.

Staff and Open House visitors recently gathered in the parlor of the Eastern Region Emergency Shelter in Moorefield to see firsthand the impact this resource has in the community.

The shelter is currently open daily on a part-time basis and provides meals, a warming space, and housing stability coaching for those experiencing difficult times. With additional support, services could expand to 24/7 shelter access.

Sometimes life happens—and having a safe place to turn can make all the difference.
