We're calling on Minnesota-based, mid-career composers in all genres to apply to be a 2027 McKnight Composer Fellow. Fellows receive $25,000 in unrestricted funds, up to $2,500 for professional development activities or to develop works-in-progress, and up to $2,000 in performance support. Fellows will also receive consultation, time, and resources from ACF and Springboard for the Arts. A panel of artist-curators will review all applications and select the four awardees. Visit the ACF McKnight Composer Fellowship webpage to read the complete program guidelines and learn more about the panelists.

Applications are due October 12th.

Before we head into the weekend, we're celebrating Siama Matuzungidi, our final McKnight Composer Fellow of the week. In addition to his work with ACF, Siama will also be hosting a family-fun event next week with !

Bring the kids to the Rondo Community Library on August 15 at 2pm, and sing along with the acoustic guitar, mbira, songs, and storytelling of Siama and Dallas Johnson. All are welcome at this celebration of young readers, also including arts and crafts, outdoor activities, face-painting, and yummy treats!

We're taking a closer look at our 2026 McKnight Composer Fellow recipients. Today we're honoring Asuka Kakitani! Kakitani’s work spans jazz large ensembles, chamber groups, vocal music, electroacoustics, and film scoring. Her work has been recognized by organizations such as New Music USA, the McKnight Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, American Composers Forum, Brooklyn Arts Council, and Minnesota State Arts Board.

We continue to celebrate or McKnight Composer Fellows by honoring harpsichordist and composer Asako Hirabayashi. Her past awards include a 2009 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians as a solo harpsichordist, 2016 McKnight Fellowship for Composers, 2012 Jerome Fund for New Music award, 2019 Schubert Club Composer Award, 2021 Opera America’s Discovery Grant, MNiatures by MN Opera, and several first prizes in the Alienor International Harpsichord Composition Competition.

This week, we're taking a closer look at our 2026 McKnight Composer Fellows, starting with saxophonist and composer, Nathan Hanson! Hanson has launched solo projects that explore how space interacts with sound. Whether it’s a cathedral, a tree farm, or a sculpture garden, Hanson investigates how to channel the sound of each performance space. The energy of the audience circulates with the music, silence, and breath. The effect leads listeners to become more present to the unfolding of each moment.
