Hospitality House SF A community center for the City's Tenderloin, Mid-Market, and Sixth Street Corridor neighborhoods

Hospitality House was founded in Spring 1967 as the Tenderloin neighborhood was emerging as a safe haven for thousands of LGBT youth fleeing oppressive homes and communities, seeking acceptance and belonging. San Francisco had little community-based capacity to support ever-increasing numbers of impoverished youth, even as the burgeoning gay rights movement had key watershed events the City’s Tend

erloin neighborhood. Concerned community volunteers decided to start Central City Hospitality House, beginning with a simple drop-in space offering safe refuge for homeless youth. As poverty and homelessness emerged as national crises, Hospitality House strengthened its response, and evolved into full-fledged anchor institution serving low-income residents, both housed and unhoused, with a commitment to social change. Today, Hospitality House operates six programs at four locations in three core communities, and serves community residents struggling with poverty, homelessness and other barriers that limit opportunity and self-determination.

We are deeply grateful to Margaret for having the courage to share her story and speak about how the Sixth Street Self-Help Center has supported her and made a difference in her life.

Sadly, the City is requiring Hospitality House to close the Sixth Street Self-Help Center on December 31, 2026.

The closing of Hospitality House’s Sixth Street Self-Help Center is more than the loss of a program. It is the loss of a place where people know they can walk through the door and be seen, heard, respected, and supported.

For people experiencing homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, substance use, and isolation, Sixth Street has been a place to find connection and a pathway forward.

It means peer counseling. Case management. Housing referrals. Mental health and substance use resources. Help accessing income and employment. A safe place to rest, connect with others, and simply be treated with dignity.

And behind every service is a person.

A person looking for housing.
A person trying to find work.
A person struggling with their mental health.
A person who needs someone to listen.
A person who needs somewhere to go.

When a community loses a resource like Sixth Street, those needs don’t disappear.

The people don’t disappear.

For nearly 60 years, Hospitality House has stood alongside San Francisco’s most vulnerable communities. We know that strong communities are built by investing in people—not by removing the places they depend on.

The loss of the Sixth Street Self-Help Center will be deeply felt, not only by the people we serve, but throughout the Sixth Street community.

Sixth Street deserves resources. Sixth Street deserves investment. And the people who call this community home deserve to be seen, supported, and heard.

For years, Hospitality House’s Sixth Street Self-Help Center has been a lifeline for people experiencing homelessness and poverty in San Francisco. It is more than a building—it is a place of dignity, safety, connection, and hope.

Every day, community members turn to Sixth Street for peer support, case management, housing and employment connections, behavioral health resources, and a safe place to simply be seen and heard.

Now, the Sixth Street Self-Help Center is at risk of closing.

Losing Sixth Street means losing critical services in a neighborhood where they are needed most. We believe San Francisco should invest in the people and programs that have stood beside this community for decades.
