From the beaches of Santa Cruz to the majesty that is Hearst Castle, from the quaint streets of Solvang to the national pride that is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the CHP's Coastal Division includes some of the most familiar scenes in the United States. The Central Coast's 325-mile landscape on the Pacific O

cean also defines the boundary of Coastal Division's area of responsibility. From the seasonal rain and fog to the summertime traffic influx, Coastal Division's transportation system presents many difficult and ever-changing traffic safety issues. These challenges are met daily by Coastal Division's 11 Area offices, one resident post, two commercial vehicle inspection facilities and three communication/dispatch centers. These facilities contain nearly 700 uniformed and non-uniformed employees who share a unified commitment: enforcing safety laws to save lives, servicing the motoring public, and to provide security to state employees and property. While the patrol officer remains the foundation of the CHP, additional support from various units within Coastal Division augment the CHP's life-saving mission. They are the Commercial Vehicle Unit, Motor Carrier Unit, Investigative Services Unit, Air Operations Unit, Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), Recruiting, and Public Affairs. These units ensure the safe and efficient operation of commercial and regulated vehicles, recover stolen vehicles and apprehend those responsible for the thefts, provide ongoing education and training of CHP personnel, and implementation of homeland security measures. In addition to airborne traffic enforcement and management, Air Operations provides assistance with search and rescue, criminal surveillance, pursuit intervention, aerial photography, blood and organ transportation, homeland security, and emergency transportation of personnel and equipment. The MAIT Unit conducts in-depth investigations and analyses of major traffic collisions using the physics of collision analysis and reconstruction. The Recruitment Program actively promotes the philosophy that the vitality of the CHP depends upon the successful recruitment of qualified personnel. Finally, public affairs is responsible for developing, coordinating, educating and assessing the impact of traffic safety and outreach programs and assisting the CHP in evaluating public perception of departmental activities.

The California Highway Patrol had an amazing, educational, and magical day today at the San Luis Obispo Wine Mixer held at the Madonna Expo Center!

We enjoyed the opportunity to connect with young adults and discuss the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving. Attendees had the chance to learn about the signs of impairment, participate in field sobriety test demonstrations, and gain a better understanding of how CHP officers determine whether a driver may be under the influence.

Our goal is always to educate, build awareness, and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, participated in our activities, and most importantly, made the commitment to never drink and drive. Together, we can save lives and make our communities safer.

In Memoriam:

On June 3, 2002, at approximately 6:59 a.m., Officer John Pedro was patrolling in the southern end of Santa Cruz County in a specially marked patrol vehicle, working commercial enforcement. Officer Pedro had turned in the center median to northbound State Route 1 and was traveling at a yet to be determined speed with his emergency lights activated. For unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle while negotiating the northbound off-ramp to eastbound State Route 129. The car hit a large tree broadside, shearing it off and overturning the car. The impact killed the officer instantly.

Preliminary reports indicate Officer Pedro was attempting to overtake and conduct an enforcement action on a vehicle that had exited the off-ramp. At the time of his death, he was 36 years old and had been a CHP officer for 12 years.

A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm

Recently, CHP Ventura Officers Manzano (ID 23638) and Johnson (ID 24278) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling at slow speeds in the fast lane of southbound US-101 near Ventura Road.

During the stop, the driver displayed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested for driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. During the inventory of the vehicle, officers discovered a variety of different drugs. The quantity of drugs located was consistent with possession for the purpose of sales.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs endangers everyone on the roadway. CHP Ventura remains committed to keeping our communities safe through proactive enforcement and public safety efforts.
